Texas dopers, do you remember a contest / game held by HEB back in the 1980s?

I was thinking about my days as a child in the 1980s, and a memory came up of a game held by HEB back in those days. This would have likely been something like the McDonald’s Monopoly game, only it involved horse racing. The way I remember it, every time you checked out at the store you would get a game card that would have the name of a horse and maybe a jockey or a racetrack. Maybe it involved collecting them all rather than holding a specific card. Either way, those who won would get some kind of discount on their next trip to the store. Do any of you all recall anything like this?

What is an HEB?

It’s the big grocery store chain here in Texas, headquartered in San Antonio. Other places have Piggly Wiggly, Kroger’s, and so on. We have HEB.

That there is H-E-B.

Was it “Let’s Go to the Races”?
I vaguely remember that game in the ‘70’s through the SuperValu stores in Minnesota.

I felt too lazy today to put the dashes in  Typing on my phone doesn’t help the situation.

Could be. I’ll look that up. I assumed it was a local thing, but it could very well have been national and involved other grocery chains. As an elementary school kid in a time before the internet there’s no way I would have known at the time.

That was the one. Thank you for finding it :grinning:.

HEB founder=Howard Edward Butt.
There’s also Hurst-Euless-Bedford. It looks like their district hyphenates the name.

You’re welcome!

It’s funny, I’ve always associated the two as though that’s where the name came from.…

We also had “Let’s Go To The Races” in Iowa, which also had Super Valu and may still, under that or another name, mostly in small towns.

HEB founder=Howard Edward Butt.

I worked at HEB in Austin when I was in High School and college from about 1988 - 1992… I don’t remember that game but if it was the early 80’s that may have been before my time.

I do remember a joke around the breakroom that HEB was going to merge with Whole Foods and become Butt-Whole Foods… Alas a merger that has yet to occur.
