I’m surprised that nobody has mentioned the man I consider to be the quintessential Texas musician:
Jon Wayne
Who else personifies Texas in music more than the man who brought us
[ul][li]Texas Cyclone[/li][li]Texas Jailcell[/li][li]Texas Polka[/li]
and, of course, the classic
[li]Texas Funeral[/ul] [/li][QUOTE]
She peed on my carpet, then she shot my horse
And now things have gone from better to bad to worse

Steve Earle grew up in San Antonio.
How about Guy Clark - he’s got to be from Texas!
And Rodney Crowell - isn’t he from Houston?
Don’t forget Kinky Friedman - Palistine
I don’t know where he is from, Junior Brown
unclviny
Butthole Surfers!
He was mentioned before, but i gotta bring him up again… Robert Earl Keen… one of Texas’s finnest… i also think that girl Miranda Lambert (on Nashville star) is going to make it big… she already has a huge fan base in texas…
Not to mention
Austin City Limits
I’m pretty sure that counts as a contribution
BTW is Austin City Limits televised statewide/nationally/globally?
I hate to <hijack> my own thread, but I was curious.
I see it in Austin
Austin City Limits is available to any PBS station nationally. CMT also shows old episodes nationally.
Um…Selena wasn’t from Texas…she was from somewhere in Mexico but spent a LOT of time in Corpus. Thus the roadside(beachside???)landmark The Overlook of the White Rose(El pasar por alto de la Rose blanca)in Corpus along the seawall.

I’m glad I checked the link. They’ve got some amazing shows coming up, including Bob Schneider , Dar Williams, Phish and a rebroadcast of the 1979 performance by Tom Waits.
Almost forgot…Doug Sahm, and the Sir Douglas Quintet,
And the greatest Garage Rock Band, quite possibley of all time, the 13th Floor elevators featuring everyones favorite off center singer/songwriter/genius Roky Erickson
Another great band from (I think) Denton:
SLOBBERBONE
They aren’t that big yet, but check them out. Great music.
I just thought of another one nobody’s mentioned: Tish Hinojosa
David Allen Coe:
*Hey, my name is David Allan Coe, and I’m from Dallas, Texas. . .
They say Texas music’s in the make,
And we’ve been makin’ music that is free.
Doin’ one-night stands,
Playin’ with our bands,
Willie, Waylon, and me.*
The Legendary Stardust Cowboy (Norman Odam) - Lubbock. David Bowie liked his single “Paralyzed” so much that he took part of his name for the character Ziggy Stardust.
If you like, sometime I can cruise by the Buddy Holly statue here in Lubbock and check out the “Lubbock walk of fame”, perhaps get you a few more names.
**…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead **are from Austin.
