Texas music

One more, the finest Western Swing band since Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys…BR549.
Home base is Roberts in Dallas…I think.

also, the man from whom I took my moniker,
Sleepy La Beef

Beyonce Knowles - Houston
Billy Preston (“Will It Go Round In Circles?”) - Houston

You may know something more about her than I do (more than likely).
But, everything I found says she was born in Lake Jackson, Texas
Not that it really matters, because she was definitely one of our girls…
wherever she was born.

BTW, I read a quote from Elvis earlier stating: “Roy Orbison is the greatest singer in the world/ or that he had the best voice in the world”. So Roy Orbison influenced Elvis and Elvis I’m pretty sure had some impact on music.

Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys

Who gave us the classic “They Don’t Make Jews Like Jesus Anymore.”

Jess Barr is one of the best guitarist I’ve ever seen. I caught them at Dan’s Bar in Denton a few years ago and I’ve been waiting for them to be discovered.

Incidently, Dan’s Bar has excellent food including a remarkable creme brule. (Sorry Francophones, I don’t know where the accent marks go.)

No one mentioned James McMurtry. Haven’t heard much from him lately, but “Too Long in the Wasteland” is one of my favorite CDs.

Everything I’ve read says that Selena was born in Lake Jackson, just outside Houston, and didn’t have much connection to her Mexican heritage until her teens. She spoke very little Spanish, for instance, until her father saw the Spanish-speaking Tejano market as a potential gold mine, and started pushing her in that direction.

David Alllan Coe is from Ohio, but he writes songs about Texas

I was going to include David Allan Coe, but like Labdad said he is from Ohio originally. He has lived in a lot of weird places including a hearse in front of the Grand Ole Opry and a cave somewhere in Tennessee. He didn’t pay his taxes for a few years and lost his house, which I think was in Florida.

Dan’s Bar is excellent, I haven’t been there in some time though. I am not even sure if it is still there. That is the bad thing about Denton all the bars and clubs change names every couple of years.

George Jones.

Spoon
Ben Kweller

And in an interesting turn, the music group “Texas”, is from Ireland.

Not sure if he was actually born in Texas, but he was raised here and came into the music scene through Austin City Limits. One hell of a guitarist, two grammy nominations, one win, Mr. Eric Johnson

Love that man’s music.

Enjoy,
Steven

“It’s only Baha Oklahoma but it’s Texas in my heart.” Dan Jenkins

D & R

Page two and buddy Holly is just now mentioned?!? For shame!

I listed Buddy on my first post. He’s #5 from the top…gotcha! :stuck_out_tongue:

also out of Lubbock, Texas “The Flatlanders”.

Scott Joplin - Linden

He may have been born near Linden, but Texarkana claims him. According to the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Foundation, much of his childhood was spent in Texarkana. It was apparently in Texarkana where he first gained access to a piano

From Austin:

Dynamite Boy
Kissinger
Rubberhed
South Austin Jug Band

some of my favorites, as yet unmentioned…
