Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and Vermont - March 4th, 2008

Not for nothin, but the numbers I got from google politics up the thread don’t match up with the ones from CNN. Apparently not only did every single person in Texas vote, they brought in an extra two million people just for effect.

Just a note to Democrats out there, listening to guys who say things like this is a big part of why you lose to George W. Bush in 2004.

EVERYTHING’S bigger in…

gets bricked

And Martin Hyde, that’s a joke, son, y’get it?

I love Doggy Knees, but he’s representative of only Doggy Knees, and you know that. :stuck_out_tongue:

Bollocks! The dems lost to Bush because they put Lurch on the pedestal. That wooden-headed twat couldn’t get elected dog catcher in catville.

Yes, I agree. Listening to humor was a big mistake. Clearly Kerry lost Ohio because of all the humorous political rants he listened to.

Why, thank you for your concern.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that if the Democrats had a winner-take-all primary system like you have seen in most of the GOP states wouldn’t Obama be overwhelmingly winning right now?

The fact that this race is going all the way to Pennsylvania and could very well go to the convention is going to hurt the Democrats chances of winning in the general election. I’ve mostly ignored national polling that puts McCain against Obama or Clinton, because all that really matters is the EVs. All Obama or Clinton have to do to win is win all the states that Kerry won + Ohio. That means McCain comes off with

266 EVs and Obama/Hillary win with 272 (assuming we have no faithless electors casting votes for John Edwards like we did in 2004.)

I don’t believe the good people of Ohio have the proper perspective or intellect to realize that Obama’s protectionist policies are ultimately going to be worse for them in the long run. This is the same state that loved those horrible steel tariffs Bush enacted. Ohio will almost certainly go Democratic in my opinion.

That pretty much means the only way McCain wins in November is if Pennsylvania goes Republican. There are a few other scenarios where McCain could win if he loses Ohio. Realistically I think this McCain may lose in New Mexico, Iowa, and Ohio, but he could still win overall if those were the only states he lost to the Dems when compared to Bush if he wins in Pennsylvania.

I think there’s a decent chance of McCain winning New Hampshire, aside from that I find his chances of swaying any Kerry states over to him questionable. Maybe Michigan because of how the Democrats might have pissed off some voters there, I don’t know. Plus McCain has typically had more appeal in Michigan than Bush did, and Bush didn’t lose by that much in Michigan.

However if this primary campaign turns even uglier and goes into the convention you could see the entire landscape shift. Right now I think either Dem nominee has a good chance of beating McCain because essentially all they have to do is make sure they win all the states where Kerry won and win Ohio–something I do not think will prove very difficult.

What are the real benefits of using a proportional representation system in a country that is overwhelmingly FPTP, especially when doing so could drag out your nominating process while the other party gets extra months to prepare for the general?

LOL

I really appreciate your candor. I liked Kerry enough, and supported him, but man he was a terrible candidate! I think he’d have made a good President, and makes a fine senator, but the point is that he was so terrible.

So Clinton winning her first state in a while - does that indicate that Ohio has always had the demographics that would lean towards Clinton, or does that indicate that her dirty campaigning has been effective at swaying voters?

CNN is saying that Texas primaries are called for Clinton, 51-48 with 75% of precincts reporting.

Gestalt.

Where are you getting that perception of Michiganders*?

I am one, I know several hundred of them, and none of them (us) would appreciate having our delegates seated since we never had a real chance to vote. None of the candidates spent any time here, and ultimately our feeling is that the only candidate (who is still in the race) that followed the party rules does NOT deserved to be penalized for following the party rules.

We are not so easily duped to believe that HRC is doing something noble by making sure our votes count.

In regard to the superdelegate thing, I’ve written several superdelegates and urged them to follow party rules, otherwise there will be some VERY pissed off people in some very important states. I hope others will do the same.
*It’s what most of us prefer, Michiganians notwithstanding.

Son of a bitch.

Sums it up. Caucus results are just coming in, though.

I have to second this. Our state party (which is horribly run and staffed by some pretty inept people imo) is of course pushing for it, but everyone I’ve talked to is either confused or completely disenfranchised by what happened with this primary. Only ONE person I’ve talked to even thinks this will have any meaningful impact on the primary process in the future, and I guess that’s the most positive response I can say I’ve heard re: our trainwreck of an election.

The various estimates of delegate allocation that I’ve read seem to be media estimates based on the voting results. When does the Democratic Party officially allocate the delegates to the candidates?

People calling Texas for Clinton seems a tad premature: according to CNN, there’s 3% in it on the primary, and 3% of votes left to be counted. Also, with 34% reporting, Obama’s winning the caucuses handily.

She will never be off my television. Never in a million years.

I think Obama should pull the caucuses, but 52%-48% is not “handily,” by my definition.

He was winning by a far larger margin when I posted.

I hope Obama finally gets the message: if you bring a knife to a gunfight you’re going to die. Gore and Kerry took the high road against Rove, look where that got them. If you have an opponent that is willing to tear you down, you have to tear her down as well or concede defeat. Time to stop playing rope a dope and take the gloves off and wipe that dopey grin off her face.
