I posted shortly after I found out that my daughter who had just finished first grade is an excellent reader about how I didn’t know what to do with her all summer. Well, we’ve made it through. She’s blossomed and she can’t wait to start school in a couple of weeks.
I went to a meeting with the principal. I found out that they don’t test for gifted programs until the end of second grade because by then children that didn’t have educational advantages at home catch up with the kids that did. She recommended that we keep doing what we’ve done all summer (museums, regular trips to the library, projects getting in depth with subjects that she is interested in, and videos and educational programs) during her after school hours. Makes me wonder why she’s even going to school for second grade, but whatever. One thing she did recommend that I hope will work is for my daughter to always have her own books with her at school, “…because we only have so many books in our library.” Cool! Now if the teacher resists I can always say, “It was Mrs. B’s idea!” She also recommended that my daughter bring projects and show & tell items of the subject that she is interested in at the time. That would be great. Her first grade teacher kept telling her, “We don’t do show and tell in this class.”
Any more advice for me since I know how our school district works now?
