Especially when they claim to be drafting for speed. I am beginning to think when they say the player they drafted has great speed,he is selling it for 20 bucks per hundred.
“Too soon?” The 2008 season is Millen’s Sgt. Pepper’s, his Sistine Chapel. This season for the Lions is the pyramid of Khufu of suck. Future teams and general managers may look at this season for centuries and wonder “How did they do that? Could aliens have been involved, or were some of the scouts and coaches slaves who were forced to work for the team against their will?” Millen had to be fired this year. There’s no way he could’ve topped this. Next year they’d probably manage to win a game by accident, but this year is a temple of awful and they may really go winless.
Heh. 1957 was the last time Detroit built a decent car, too!
Oddly enough, next year’s Lions team would be a terrific blank canvas for a new GM and coaching staff. They have 3-4 quality pieces to build around, and they don’t have any veteran players with big contracts. Shaun Rogers was the highest paid defensive player, and his cap number will be off the books, as will the remainder of Dre’ Bly’s contract (which was still on the books this year because of cap wiggling).
I say this quite honestly - if I were a GM candidate, I would love the Detroit job. You get five years guaranteed no matter how bad your record is, you have no salary cap issues whatsoever, and an assload of high draft picks in a draft where the fans won’t be screaming for a quarterback ('cause there isn’t one).
Plus, imagine your legacy if you turned around THAT team. If you got to 8-8 you’d be one of the greatest rebuilders in NFL history, like Dungy/McKay, Parcells, Marvin Lewis, etc.
I think they can build around Culpepper. He has not impressed yet,but he may buy them a few years of adequacy. For the Lions that is a high bar.He may be better than that.
It is all about next years draft. We have to be able to protect the QBs. Ours take a terrible beating. They will have to draft an offensive lineman too high and overpay. Maybe they draft 2 of them. But it is a crying need. The defense is bad but not as bad as it looks. They are on the field for the whole game. They have played a couple decent games. The Lions got 6 first downs the whole game. The defense may as well just stay out there. They will be blacked out the rest of the year.
Oh I am happy they (the Cards) are going to the playoffs. I have been a long suffering Cards fan. In fact, I think they even have a chance to win their first playoff game in 10 years. Depends on who comes to town. I just do not see them getting to much further than the first round of the playoff.
Detroit has sucked for a while now, after many years of mediocre play. I think with the right GM and Coach they are one or two years away from average to good.
Detroit reminds me of Arizona a few years ago under Dennis Green, A good set of WRs a serviceable RB and a few very talented defensive players, needing a supporting cast. Detroit has some good players. Their defense is poor because they cant get off the field.
Culpepper is doing ok at QB. Considering the time he has had to study the play book. Culpepper can be a good QB once he gets the system down.
Why Tebow? I usually find a QB playing for a highly rated team in college,is a pro disappointment. The difference between good and poor teams in college is large. They often fatten up stats on the lowly rated teams that are parts of all good teams schedules nowadays.
