Any of you who watch Weeds this season saw that, after Doug sabotaged the sewage pipe a few eps ago, he was dancing around to a song called “Buttmachine” (link to the video). The song is hilarious, as is the video.
The artist who sings that song is called That 1 Guy, and he’s a one man band who plays an instrument he calls “The Magic Pipe.” It is made out of pipes, bass strings, drum pickups, delay pedals, and god knows what else. He puts on very cool show, sometimes he plays the Pipe with a slap technique, sometimes with a drum stick, hell, sometimes even with his boot.
I saw him live last year when he was touring with Buckethead. He’s on tour right now. If he’s coming to a town near you, definitely worth seeing. The Magic Pipe has to be seen in action to be truly appreciated.
I didn’t see that episode of Weeds yet, but I saw That 1 Guy open up for The Proclaimers in Seattle a few years ago and thought he was fabulous. His stuff doesn’t translate well in his recordings (his CD only got one listen from me after I picked it up) but it’s all about watching him live. It’s amazing that he’s able to create all of those sounds on his own.
I’m glad someone else has seen him, and I hope more people go see him. That’s partially why I posted this thread. I had no idea what I was getting the first time I saw him and I was blown away. The tickets for this show were only like $8, which is a steal for such a good live show. Check him out if you can, Dopers.
