The 0-16 NFL Season Thread, 2008 Edition

It’s time once again, my friends, to place your bets and choose a winner. Or rather, choose a loser. Who will be bad enough, injury-riddled enough, and dedicated to failure enough to go 0-16 this NFL season?

We’re catching the action a little earlier than last year, so half the league is technically eligible:

Miami Dolphins (AFC East)
Cleveland Browns (AFC North)
Cincinnati Bengals (AFC North)
Jacksonville Jaguars (AFC South)
Houston Texans (AFC South)
Indianapolis Colts (AFC South)
San Diego Chargers (AFC West)
Kansas City Chiefs (AFC West)
Oakland Raiders (AFC West)
Washington Redskins (NFC East)
Minnesota Vikings (NFC North)
Detroit Lions (NFC North)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFC South)
St. Louis Rams (NFC West)
Seattle Seahawks (NFC West)
San Francisco 49ers (NFC West)

Now, obviously not many of these teams have a realistic shot at the 0-16 brass ring. We can safely eliminate the Jags, Colts, Chargers, and Vikings pretty much right off the bat. Teams in the same devision play each other, so many contenders will be eliminated on those games.

I think the obvious true contenders are the Rams, Raiders, Texans, and Lions. Last year’s “winner,” the Dolphins, showed enough to me against the Jets to show they’ll win a few games. The 49ers are bad, but they, too, will eke out about four wins. The dark horse candidates for me are the Bengals and Browns.

My choice: St. Louis Rams
Injuries, incompetence, and apathy all lower the Rams just barely below the Raiders in overwhelming suckitude.

I don’t think any team will do it this year, but if I had to pick one, it would be the Raiders. I also think the Chiefs will have a shot at complete futility this year.

St. Louis.

I can see how San Francisco and Oakland have a chance of winning a couple of games but the Rams are horrible; they have nothing going for them. And that’s not even considering the inevitable Marc Bulger injury/Leonard Little DUI.

Gotta go Rams on this one…there’s a handful of others who can compete for that 1st pick in the '09 Draft, but I gotta give St. Louis the best shot.

Hal, That’s just your Eagles hate talking since it was the Birds that dealt them their Week 1 loss!

Actually, I’m an Eagles fan and I don’t think the Eagles are especially good this year. So, I’ll concur with the Rams pick after that 38-3 loss.

One nice stat from that game: Rams 0 for 11 on third down conversions.

One more thing about this thread, a true 0-16 record is difficult, but it is the goal. Ultimately it’s about the race for the top draft pick.

The Lions got waxed by a very average team in Atlanta. Matt Millen is still their GM. Plus they are the Lions.

They have a good shot at it.

Not a chance. They have plenty of talent on offense and will run into at least one team that can’t score enough points to beat them.

I’d be surprised if the lions come anywhere close to 0-16.

Raiders. Total suckatude all season. The trouncing they took by the Broncos convinces me that they are the team not to win.

err

My confidence lies completely with the Rams this season. The Raiders just looked extremely unorganized and only slightly underwhelming. Once they figure out if they like to run or pass they should be better. There had no confidence in their QB and it was very obvious. Its funny watching them run down the field then decide to let him throw when you clearly don’t think he is ready. They will pull a few wins out but the Rams are just plain underachievers.

The Chiefs and the Bengals will battle for the number one pick all year. I like the Chiefs to hold on longer before mistakenly winning a game.

I don’t think any team will go 0-16, but the Rams have to have the best shot.

Here’s a fun statistic from their Week 1 game: they were outgained 522-166.

I am a Raiders fan through and through. So while I don’t think we have a realistic shot at wining anything or even making it to the playoffs, I hold out hope that we might be able to pull together a perfect 0-16 season.

Silver and Black…attack? Go Raiders!

I have to go with Oakland.

The Rams are bad, but they at least get to play against San Fran twice. So they have a shot at 1-15.

I see the Rams beating the 49ers at least once.

I think the Miami/Oakland game could decide who has the chance to go all the way.

The 49ers will beat the Rams twice this year.

Probably the Bengals or the Raiders.

Neither coach has control of the team. Similar to the Dolphins last year.

Since I have to pick one, I’ll take the Bengals. The Raiders get to play the terrible Chiefs twice.

Marvin Lewis doesn’t have control of the Bengals and Chad Johnson is going to be a pain in the ass until he gets out of there.

I hate the Raiders, but they can usually rally themselves long enough to beat a team in the AFC West. Even though they looked like children playing offense, they had a pretty decent defense last year, and I think if they pulled their shit together, they could end the season without complete and utter humiliation.

So my vote is for the Rams.

I know the Rams looked terrible last week, but I find it hard to believe that an offense featuring Bulger, Holt, and Jackson won’t manage at least one win when they’re in a division full of below-average teams.

The Bengals, on the other hand… tough division, tough schedule. With the regression of Palmer, even if Ocho Cinco and Housh stay healthy, that team is gonna be a bit offensively challenged. It’s not likely, of course, but I could see it happening.
