17 in a row and 23 out of 24 (pending this week’s expected result) going back to last season definitely puts the Bucs on notice that their record, however timeless, might not stand another season.
The difference is notable, though. The Bucs were an expansion team, the Lions are not.
The Lions are a repeating expansion team. Every couple years they start over. When I watch them now, I am shocked how badly they can play. They have had a ton of high draft choices . The problem is less on the field than in the management.
Technically, it was accurate when it was written because it is the result of analyzing all the actual trades teams had done. In essence, it isn’t the guide teams go by but instead it reflects what teams went by on their own before the chart existed.
It’s like the passer rating, which was calibrated to the actual passing statictics from previous years. The value chart was calibrated to the trades from previous years.
One problem shared by both is that they don’t change. They are both based on “performance”, but circumstances change. Were a new passer rating and draft chart developed today, both would be calibrated differently.
QB performance on the Lions is bad, But, without protection and a running game it is difficult to do well. Our running backs are hampered by poor blocking . Defensive backs and safetys have to cover for 8 seconds. Too long for a pro.
I don’t see the problem. According to the chart the 1st pick is worth 3000 points. The slots used to take the guys I mentioned only add up to half that. Luther Elliss 20th (850), Mike Utley 59th (310), Jerry Ball 63rd (276), Eric Andolsek 111th (72), and Willie Clay 221st (4) = 1,512 points. Unless I’m missing something, according to the chart the first pick is worth all those plus a high first rounder (8th overall).
The problem is that you’re dealing with NFL general managers that’d never do it, even though it makes sense. It’s practically the Ricky Williams trade that you’re proposing.
I don’t think it’s in the same ballpark. NO moved up only 4 slots and gave up about what I’m proposing **that year **plus first and third the following year. I’m proposing letting someone move up 15 or 20 slots. You do that for their middle round 2nd and 3rd round picks and then move down in one or both of those rounds to pick up a couple lower round picks. I think it’s doable, not that the Lions are likely to pull it off. In any case, they need to trade down, taking the best deal they can get.
The Detroit Freep has declared this game our Superbowl. The Lion players are really fired up to not be the worst team of all time. Too late. 1 znd 15 will still do the trick.
