Umar was pretty important in making Islam a world religion. In Mohammed’s lifetime, Islam had become the religion of Arabia. But it was Umar who took it to Egypt, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Iran, Libya, etc.

Maxwell? Good grief folks - what were you thinking?
Inventions. Antony van Leeuwenhoek
Leader. Napoleon Bonaparte
Philosophy. Lao Tzu
Religion. St. Augustine
Science. Johannes Kepler
Don’t look at me - I just score the thing.
On the plus side, I got 3 of my targets. On the minus side, Maxwell, wtf???
Inventions. Marconi
Leaders. Adolf Hitler
Philosophy. Machiavelli
Religion. Augustine
Science. Copernicus
Yes, Hitler. His Reich didn’t exactly last 1,000 years, and the long-term results of his rule were mainly in the exact opposite direction of what he wanted to achieve. (Speaking of German leaders, Otto Von Bismarck is notable for his absence from this list).
Philosophy is hard; I wouldn’t hate the loss of Michelangelo or Shakespeare at this point, but voting for an artist feels like a copout. Machiavelli is less of a systematizer than most of the others remaining on the list.
It was a near-coin flip in my mind between the City of Man (Constantine) and City of God(Augustine), but Augustine was just slightly less important to the development of Christianity IMO. Constantine is next, then we can get to the actual founders of religions.
Maxwell surprised me too. Seems to me the whole electricity thing has caught on in a big way.
But, hey, I’m still amazed by the departures of Mendel and Shi Huang.
My votes for Round 9:
Inventor. Louis Daguerre
Leader. Cyrus
Philosophy. Niccolo Machiavelli
Religion. Umar ibn al-Khattab
Science. Johannes Kepler
The religious category has gotten very tough for me. I’ve essentially broken it down into three sub-categories.
The founders: Moses, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed
The developers: Paul, Augustine, Martin Luther
The disseminators: Umar, Constantine, and the now departed Asoka
As you can see I’m working back through the three categories. Constantine will be my next choice. The I’ll work back through the three developers of Christianity in reverse chronological order. Then I’ll have to make some decisions about the Big Four.
Wow, I made a clean sweep with my votes! Unfortunately now I have to come up with five new names to eliminate.
Inventions. Henry Ford
Leaders. Josef Stalin
Philosophy and Arts. Michelangelo
Religions. Martin Luther
Sciences. Enrico Fermi
Ford: with industrialization in full swing, it was only a matter of time before someone thought of the assembly line.
Stalin: Although he was a ruthless leader, soviet-style communism did not last to the end of the century and he did not have the global impact that Hitler did.
Michelangelo: kind of a cop-out vote for an important figure in a mostly uninfluential field
Luther: Certainly a defining figure in church history, but not as widely influential as either Augustine or Constantine.
Fermi: did not invent the bomb by himself, and the bomb itself has only been around 65 years.
Inventor: Antony van Leeuwenhoek
Politics: Josef Stalin
Philosophy and Arts: Michelangelo
Religion: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab
Science: Galileo Galileo
Invention. Louis Dagurre
Leader. Cyrus the Great
Philosophy. Confucius
Religion. ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab
Science. Galileo Galilei
No changes this time… oh well.
Inventions. Louis Dagurre
Leader. Queen Elizabeth I
Philosophy. Michelangelo
Religion. Moses
Science. Galileo Galilei
wowsers, having expended much ammo I finally got Charlemagne.
Michelangelo and Galileo are unfortunate, but passing ain’t an option.
The other three don’t rank at this elite level.
Invention. Louis Dagurre
Leader. Queen Elizabeth I
Philosophy. Nicoli Machiavelli
Religion. St Augustine
Science. Nicolas Copernicus
Inventor: Gugilemo Marconi
Leader: Cyrus the Great
Philosophy and Arts: Michelangelo
Religion: Buddha
Science: Galileo Galilei
