Yes. There were a couple of groups local groups that fit that description, one being the Posse Comittatus. The group’s leaders got busted back in the mid 80’s and what remained just sorta went away.
A more current group has changed legal names many times over the years in apparent effort to thwart prosecution for various allegedly shady property transactions and tax evasion. Nobody knows what to call them these days so locals refer to them as “The Cult”. They also allegedly threatened the life of Shawano’s mayor some years ago. They are still around but have been keeping a low profile for the past few years. They still have a bunch of unresolved legal stuff so I’m sure they’ll be back in the news again.
Aren’t we lucky? We have two cults in Shawano County! There must be something in the water.
