A ‘wife-beater’ is a ribbed tank-style shirt. Usually worn as a men’s undershirt.
Today’s FoxTrot.
It was about 45° when I went on my walk yesterday. (Incidentally, I rode both motorcycles around the route. Both trip meters said 1.9 miles. So I’ve been walking 3 km instead of 2.5 km. Or 2.9 km assuming a 5% error in my speedometers. Eh, call it 3 km.) I wore my unlined Nomex flight jacket and my fleece REI gloves. Could have done without the gloves, as the temperature was quite pleasant.
Weigh-in today, I’m down 0.8, despite the fact that I ate like a pig. I almost wish that I’d lose weight when I eat well, and gain when I eat badly, since at least that would reinforce good habits. As it is, I think I’ll magically lose weight despite eating badly, since it so often happens. Of course, it often DOESN’T happen as well.
178.2/172.6/?
My scale is taunting me. It hasn’t budged.
I’ve been eating well, but haven’t been exercising as much as I should have been.
I must get off my semi-fat ass.
OK, pity party’s mostly over.
I went to the gym every day this week. Full strength-training workout on Monday. Sore as hell on Tuesday, but I did my full hour of cardio. Wednesday I managed only a half ST workout – still mighty sore. Today I did my cardio hour. Tomorrow I’ll try the full ST workout again.
Diet – better. Have been “eating up” some not-so-great stuff we accumulated over the holidays, and also gearing up to eat better: looking up recipes, stocking up on ingredients and easy vegetables, etc. Mr. S is freshly motivated as well; he doesn’t need to lose weight (5’6" and 135#, the bastard) but he is interested in eating better at his age (50) and he just found out that his cholesterol is still high, despite our mostly vegetarian diet and his light eating habits. Must be genetic. He’s started on Lipitor.
Anyway, today I finally got my salad fixin’s all set up in the fridge for easy lunches. I make a yummy salad that I love and I can eat it for lunch every day (thus helping to beef up my veggie intake), but it’s been hard getting motivated to eat a cold salad in the dead of winter. Now that I’m in the middle of one, though, I’ve got my taste for it back.
Green leaf lettuce
Frozen peas and corn, cooked and chilled
Garbanzo beans
Shredded carrots
Fat-free mozzarella cheese
Raw sunflower seeds
Cardini’s Caesar Dressing (yes, it’s full-fat and sinful, but it’s yum-MY and it gets me to eat a salad every day. I just go easy on it)
Tonight I’m going to cook up some quinoa for the first time, to keep in the fridge and toss with cooked veggies. We want to start cooking up big batches of veg ahead of time and keep them in the fridge for reheating during the week. With Mr. S working second shift, we don’t have dinner together, and we’re usually too busy during the day to shift that meal to lunch. So lunch is usually each of us just scrounging for whatever we want when we get hungry.
I started the year at 196 (down 20 pounds), then last week I was creeping back up to almost 200 again (the horror!). This week was “party week,” as they say, so although I was weighing myself I wasn’t fretting too much about the numbers. (And I was also not beating myself up too much about feeling run over; between cramps and re-starting my workouts, I should have felt like crap!) Next week should start looking better.
As of today:
216 / 196.75 / 150
After getting a much needed pep talk from my cousin (he was 220 and now is 140) I ate a very small portion of spaghetti when I got home from work, then went to the grocery store and loaded up fruits, vegetables, V-8, and low-fat, grain tortilla wraps, tortilla, oatmeal, and bran cereal. I’m excited to get this weight loss going now. I’m 185 and plan to be at least down to 160 by labor day.
Wish me luck!
Grrr. No change.
used to weigh myself not at all when I first started dieting. My clothes were my guide but I decided I needed more regular feedback. Started weighing myself weekly until the recent gain.
Now I’ve decided twice-weekly weighing might be better. So far, it isn’t.
Checking in a day early because I don’t think I’m going to weigh much less tomorrow morning than I did this morning. Total loss since I started: 6 lbs.
the good news
this morning I am back to what I was 2 weeks ago
the bad news
it means I had gained a lot last week
>sigh<
Gotta buckle down - Competition is coming!
Yay! I’ve been trying to do the Couch to 5k program in an attempt to make me not hate exercise. Last week, both times I tried I had to stop early because of leg cramps. This time, I got through the warm up and 20 min of 90 seconds jogging, 2 minutes walking in intervals. And I don’t feel like death!
is this actual running/jogging? or just vigorous leg movements while seated (because that I can do)
No, it’s actual running/jogging/walking. The ‘Couch to’ part is because it’s a program designed for people who, while they’re in fine overall health, don’t do much cardio exercise. It gradually gets you from mostly walking with some jogging to, in theory, being able to run 5k without stopping.
Linky?
puff puff I got here late - can I join in?
I need to get rid of some unwanted fat from a VERY good holiday in Hawaii and the usual Christmas/New Years binge.
The number one aspect of the plan is to keep a food log - allowing me to carefully scrutinise what I eat, along with watching the portions, less meat more veg, regular exercise.

I’ll weigh myself once a week and check the progress from there.
I’ve been trying to lose weight for about four weeks. (Started 27 December.) Through diet and exercise (including an atkins-esque diet for the last couple of weeks) I have lost ten pounds.
Cabdude, Welcome! It’s never too late to join. Good luck!
Johnny LA, Congrats man! That’s great!
So far today I’ve eaten an apple, had a small bowl of bran flakes, and drank a V-8. I’m going to try the nibbling all day method whenever I feel hungry but I’m staying away from fattening foods like cheese (the death of me). I had some errands to run and rather than haul my fat ass in my car I walked. It took me about 40 minutes and now I feel great. I love walking and I might as well take advantage of the unseasonably warm weather.
