Yeah, seriously. Why would anyone vote for a GOP pres with a GOP legislature, when all they will do is try to take away healthcare to millions, and pursue an agenda that undoes all the good President Obama has done. Back to the good old days of torture, drill baby drill, no gov’t intrusion on healthcare unless you are a woman (then it’s transvaginal wands for everyone!), complaints about the deficit while giving tax breaks to the 1%… shudders
Sounds terrifying.
The worst Dem is far better than the best Republican.
I don’t agree in theory. But right now in practice? Yes. Because the best Republican has still aligned her or himself with the GOP and the GOP right now is not okay. It will take more than a single good Republican as president to make the party okay. It will take a change in platform, a change in focus, and a change in who is given a place at the table.
Bush, so far, is the one sounding the most like a grown up. His lack of terror about immigrants is a good start, and if the party embraced that and put it into its platform, that would be an even better start. But instead, he’s likely to come under fire for what he’s saying. Just as there are some freepers who think Bush’s views on immigration disqualify him for office, the Republican party’s views on immigration (and other things) disqualify them from office for me, even when individuals might break the mold.
Polls at this point are basically worthless, regardless of what they say about either side. It’s more than a year before the first primaries, for Og’s sake! Nobody even knows for certain who’s running and who’s not.
Is there a candidate like Jon Huntsman this cycle? I’m not even sure whether or not Jon Huntsman was Jon Huntsman, or if people were projecting a lot of disparate qualities on him. He came and went too quickly.
In terms of perception, I would say Chris Christie comes the closest. How he governs a blue state might be much different than what he would attempt as president. But overall, he’s the least objectionable republican imo. I like his “you’re not going to tell me what to do or put me in a box” rejection of conservative purity. Of course, if I like that, then a true conservative probably sneers at him for being a “RINO.”
New Hampshire Winners:
2012 GOP - Huntsman - Lost the primary
2008 GOP - McCain - Lost the general election
2008 Dem - Clinton - Lost the primary
2004 Dem - Kerry - Lost the general election
2000 GOP - McCain - Lost the primary
2000 Dem - Gore - “Lost” the general election
Yeah, NH is a great bell-weather for the GOP to follow.
NH (and Iowa and, to some extent SC) aren’t to determine the winner, they’re to eliminate the underfunded and unpopular.
Polls aren’t predictive at this point, but to call them worthless is a stretch. Scott Walker’s name recognition is pretty low compared to Bush’s. If he’s competing with Bush now, in both Iowa and New Hampshire, that spells trouble for Jeb.
