Close, but no cigar (joint?). It was San RAFAEL (not San Mateo), another suburb in the Bay Area. According to a recent article published in the San Francisco Chronicle (on April 20-- duh!), the use of “420” was started by a group of high school stoners attending San Rafael High School in 1971, and who used to meet at 4:20 in front of a statue of Louis Pasteur at their school. The students (now in their late 40s) took their story to High Times magazine and with various collborative evidence, was recently declared the originators of the term.
You can find the Chronicle article at SFGate.
You can find the “founding fathers of 420” (as certified by High Times) at www.waldo420.com

I built a double-chambered bong tonight out of stuff lying around the apartment. Ah, it sure hits like a dream. One of my rare sucesses!
Usually my bongs suck. Sometimes they don’t even work at all. Once I bought an aqarium pump in order to rig up a bong that would blow the smoke out in my face so I wouldn’t have to inhale (talk about lazy!). Unfortunately, the pump I bought (the cheapest one) wasn’t strong enough to manage more than a trickle of air.
The toughest thing about making bongs is getting a good seal. Air always finds a place to squeak out. I use that white putty-like substance people use to hang up posters to plug up the airholes.
I thought a “quarter” was called that because it was $25.
no wait, that was a friend of mine . . . .

Details, Details Baglady…being from the south bay, I don’t really no the difference let alone care about the difference between the two!
I was just going on memory(which isn’t the best after all that weed…), and I was of by like 20 miles(?).

A friend of mine tells me that a quarter means a quarter ounce.
Jee, a quarter for $25 is a really good price. Oh erm… at least that’s what my friend tells me.
For those of you with nothing better to do on Thursdays than smoke stinky green along with your computer, may I suggest
“The Bong Hits With Brymo Show” from 3-6pm http://www.vulcanradio.com
I spin an ecclectic mix of musical styles while smoking an unreal amout of bong hits.
If you live in Oakland, Ca. you can listen to a simulcast on pirate station 88.1 FM
For those of you on the bottle, “Barbara’s Cocktail Hours” proceeds my show so get a bucket ready and tune in!
The Mrs and I use them little brass screens you can buy 10 for $1 at the local bodega. She has a wood unit that’s seen several years of service. I used to own a nice little brass fella but he got abandoned one night after a paranoia attack walking alone in Balto seeing a cop pull a U in my direction. Rest in peace, Spike…
We don’t do much, basically since we seclude ourselves in the boudoir after the kidlet has been put to bed and toke a wee to mellow out.
{b]Tomcat** we are supremely jealous of you and your situation. We want in!
Silo Where in VA are you? Drop me a line via my profile. I wanna talk.
The putty to use is plumbers putty. You can get a little plastic tub of it at the hardware store for about a dollar. Get some it’s THE BEST for homemade bongs, gets em air tight.
I’m in Chesterfield County. I’ll send an e-mail to you in a few daze. I will have more free time then. Are you in Va? What area?
Yep the derivation of quarter is from the 1/4 (quarter) division of the ounce. I get my quarters anywhere from 20 to thirty bucks, but once a long time ago (about 25 years ago) quarters were like five or ten bucks. Inflation is in the dope market too. An ounce is like 28.8 grams, so a queater is about 7.2 grams. But, I usually get 8 grams per quarter. I think the average amount you get for a quarter in the country is 7.5 grams per q. Don’t get screwed.
Depends on the bud. Some bud isn’t worth $25 a q (Mexican crap), but really good stuff you will RARELY (more like never), see at $25 (unless you know a grower).
Sometimes I really miss California.

Silo We’re in Arlington… no idea where the heck Chesterfield County is… must be down South? Looking forward to hearing from you.
Olentzero, i’m about a half hour west of Richmond.
I checked a map @ http://www.mapquest.com, so I see your just outside of D.C. I am about 2 hours south of ya, just outside of Richmond.
Hey guys/gals I thought it would be cool if we could get 420 posts on this thread. It’s a long way to go…but we would retire it at four hundred twenty posts. Wouldn’t that be cool/appropriate?
