"The Affair" on SHOWTIME; Season 2

Well, that was quite the unsatisfactory season finale, IMHO. Not because it was decidedly unpredictable (I even thought beforehand that they would pull something like they did…my wild cards were Luisa or Helen’s mom) but just because it’s apparent that it’s more important to continue to serialize than anything else.

I agree that this season was better than the first, but this was a pretty big letdown for all the buildup.

The only question I had is whether Helen knows Alison was involved in the death. Otherwise, the family that slays together, stays together!

I quite liked the finale. “Unsatisfactory” and “letdown” aren’t words that come to mind when describing it.

Man, that was some haunting karaoke.

Well, I did think the karaoke was the best part. I always thought the song was more about a brothel than anything; the wiki page for the song mentions other interpretations that actually fit in with the storyline.

Yeah, that does seem to be a rather important point.

They did return to the ‘his point of view/her point of view’ structure for the finale, which makes sense. I wasn’t clear, in Noah’s segment, on whether he was supposed to be able to see Alison lurking in the bushes near Scotty’s body. In Alison’s version, of course, she walked out and spoke to Noah. But in Noah’s version he seemed to be just peering into the darkness. Maybe I missed something…? (Not sure if we’re spoilering this stuff, but did so to stay on the safe side.)

I went back and rewatched that scene after we saw Alison’s version. He definitely saw her. It’s also reasonably possible that she spoke to him in his version, and that it just wasn’t shown in order to give her version a better payoff.

Yeah, that makes sense (and thanks for the clarification).

What’s weird is that in his version, it’s unclear that he sees her. But obviously he does, if her version at the end is correct.

I thought her version of the wedding vows were funny. No wedding vows ever encompass: I promise to not make any important decisions without consulting you… to give you the space to <blah blah blah>. Project much, Alison?

Or… does she just imagine/dream that he bursts out in court “I’m guilty”, the same way she imagined those ludicrous wedding vows? Perhaps she also imagined Scotty changing the lyrics to House of the Rising Sun, also.

Tune in next season to find out!!!

For me the biggest dif in the two versions was how Allison told Noah the kid isn’t/might not be his. I suppose that maybe Noah was making his version up to fit in with a storyline that he was devasted and went on a major drunk to help explain him hitting someone if he eventually had to take the blame.

Also, I suppose you aren’t thinking straight in a situation like that but between the three of them they could have come up with a reasonable explanation that a drunken Scotty was responsible for getting himself hit. It’s hard to imagine leaving a body on the road and not having it traced back to the car that hit it.

Finally…what was that boat by the side of the road so significant in all of Noah’s dreams and memories. He had no idea that Scotty would be laying in it that night.

Finally again… about the car. In this ep didn’t they say there wasn’t much damage to it. What hapenned to the tow truck driver in the first season who had to help that night ?

Also, in the first story-line (Noah), they drive well past the boat before they hit Scotty.

And it doesn’t make sense that they would be out near “The End” if the plan was to drop Helen off first. Isn’t “The End” out at, well, the end-- meaning there isn’t anything past it?

Also, when the attorney asks Noah’s ass-hole friend what he found when investigating the car wash scene, and he says “blood”, why didn’t the defense attorney challenge that guy’s ability to determine that it was, in fact, blood?

I’m also wondering if these courtroom scenes, which are generally out of sequence, are meant to be objectively true that is, not biased by one of the observers’ memories.

What I don’t understand is why they didn’t just drive straight into Helen’s parents’ house, wake her up and deal with the car and all the fallout there? It’s not like her mother wouldn’t put her considerable resources towards protecting her daughter. I know they had a falling out but it seemed like everyone was back in good graces at the wedding. Hell, Noah could even say something like “If you hadn’t given me a Xanax I wouldn’t have asked Helen to drive!”

Noah has a mindset that he has to be the big man and save everybody himself. And of course being drunk doesn’t help with decision-making. One has to wonder what type of person Helen is that she would let someone else go to prison for something she did. No wonder she paid for no was lawyer that’s the least you could do.
