The Alina Habba Pit thread

Wow, she sounds like a real piece of work – someone who treats everyone around her with utter contempt, and she doesn’t care even when it draws the ire of a powerful authority figure like a trial judge and weakens her position. I can see how this contemptuous personality would endear her to Trump, and I can also readily see Trump being too stupid to understand that this makes her a terrible lawyer.

she is trump with a law degree. usually he has a “normal” lawyer and habba is the “drama” lawyer. this time the drama lawyer is the lead.

And I think that’s her real play. She’s showing the same contempt for the courts that Trump feels, and she’s betting that, if he wins, she’ll be the presumptive nominee for Attorney General, or the next Supreme Court position, because that’s the kind of lawyer Trump likes.

Pretty sure it was “Bang! Zoom!”

One of the critical life lessons for people who are – or who want to be – more assertive is to know when to back down because you’re in a battle that you’re not gonna win. This applies when dealing with police, judges, and any other authority figures with power over you. You may have recourse later on, but insulting them to their face is just a sign of unbridled arrogant stupidity of exactly the type that Trump loves to wallow in and is always counterproductive. What works with his adoring dumbass sycophants doesn’t work in court. As I said, Habba is an absolutely terrible personality to represent anyone in court, and it seems to be just part of her general and probably willful ignorance of the legal process.

Well, yes, I’d agree with all of that, but were I a shitty lawyer angling to get in the good graces of a wannabe-dictator-to-be, I’d also ignore all of that. She’s playing to an audience of one, and he eats that shit up like cold Big Macs.

What the fuck? I can’t imagine being on the jury and hearing that exchange. Like, you asked her why she gave a book a title, and then you object to her explanation of why she gave the book that title? Where are you going with that? Do you think Carroll’s gonna say, “OKAY I ADMIT IT I DON’T THINK WOMEN NEED MEN AND THAT’S WHY I FAKE NEWSED DONALD TRUMP”?

Interesting analysis here:

Alina Habba’s “shocking” courtroom antics in Donald Trump’s civil defamation trial showcase just what kind of client the former president makes, a legal expert contends.

Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance professed herself stunned at the blustering blunders Habba made as she cross-examined E. Jean Carroll, the writer Trump has been found liable of sexually abusing in the 1990s and defaming by denying the attack.

“It’s shocking that a former president is represented by a lawyer who doesn’t seem to know her way around a courtroom," Vance writes in her substack. “He is so toxic that most of the good lawyers won’t touch him.”

I wonder if Habba is regretting that interview where she said she’d rather be pretty than smart because she can fake being smart. She can’t even fake that.

To be fair, there’s no compelling evidence that she’s even tried yet.

How would The Donald’s absence change the level of adult supervision?

This is Trump we’re talking about. He wouldn’t take anesthesia for his colonoscopy because he would have to give up power to Pence while he was under.

I find myself in the truly novel and horribly uncomfortable position where defending my own words pushes me perilously close to defending Donald Trump.

I’ve gotta’ fold here, Folks. I’m sorry.

I think we’re on the same page. The control freak is pretty sure that nobody does his horrid schtick better than he does. I would suppose he wouldn’t want to give Habba even an inch of slack.

Sorry for interjecting, but this is the pit, and the only thing I can think of after reading about Habba’s attempts at lawyering is: “rude, thoughtless little pig.”

Again, and again. It attempts to speak, and it fails. It makes small steps to assert its personhood. Against all odds. It fails.

My nickname for Habba is “rude, thoughtless little pig.” Pace Baldwin.

Or Garage Barbie works, I suppose. She has pretty severe skin damage, it appears, and her hair does not seem healthy, but if one wishes to equate her with a meat puppet, as many others have done above, one could suppose that it were true, in an alternate universe.

I prefer not to focus on her neglected appearance but rather the contents of her ignorant deeds.

Dehumanizing anybody is gross. There are a million reasons to call her terrible without calling her personhood into question.

“I” will not be spoken to like that.

That is a ruse, a gaffe, and it is risible.

There are times when a person knows his or her own identity must be subordinate to rule of law. Such as at court, during certain proceedings. It’s probable someone could argue that failing to meet that sufficient condition of personhood one might be an ‘it.’ Not a necessary condition, but it is sufficient.

We call person hood in to question all the time in the pit. Why is she immune?

Do we? Maybe we should do better.

Yes, “we” as in the pit in general. I can’t recall if I have in particular. Follow any trump thread for a short time.

Oh, and I don’t feel particularly bad about it because if people act like some of the dehumanized do (and I’m speaking strictly actions) perhaps they don’t deserve the title of human. I really think more, but it would take too long. I’m sure I’ll get an opportunity to opine more soon enough.

Agree completely. It takes a certain type of person (note: person) to refer to people they don’t like as ‘it,’ ‘vermin,’ ‘orcs,’ ‘gooks,’ ‘Untermensch’ or the like. I may dislike TFG so much I refuse to type out his name when talking about him, but guess what? Despicable as he may be, he’s still a human being.

Good lord, do you even realize just how authoritarian this makes you sound? Those that don’t know their place to those in positions of authority fail to meet the sufficient condition of personhood? Consider for a moment how this sounds when referring to uppity (insert minority slur here).
