Ahhh that makes sense. I need to look into that.
This is part of the reason I love the 'dope: people are so particular about the things they like they will wait and plan and plot to get them. Congrats! ![]()

I think Kohl’s also has (or used to have, maybe) Kohl’s Bucks or whatever they were called. Basically register rewards for $5 or whatever off on your next visit if you spent X amount. Good only at Kohl’s, but their clothes are pretty cute, so it’s a win-win.
They still have Kohl’s Cash. Basically, every few weeks they run a deal where for every $50 you spend, they give you $10 of store credit good for a certain time frame, usually the next week. I’ve not tried it yet, but a clerk told me a couple months ago that if you have expired KC, the store will give you half credit for it. Kohl’s also will send you coupons/discount codes for percentages off your entire purchase periodically if you sign up for their mailing/email lists. Once you start stacking sales and percentages off and Kohl’s Cash, you can rack up some pretty great deals. Last year over the course of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, I got over $700 of stuff for $175.
And I loooooovvvvveee their customer service. There was a problem with something I ordered from the website that necessitated them placing a new order and having me return what I received (Granny’s robe and slipper set arrived sans slippers). It took 10 minutes or so on the phone last night waiting to speak to someone, and another 10 while the CSR got approval, did all his documentation, took my payment info, etc. This afternoon I took the paperwork and the offending article to the service desk, told the lady it was shipped incomplete and I needed to return it. She scanned the paper, scanned the tag, handed me a receipt showing a credit to my card, and wished me a merry Christmas. It took like 45 seconds. Also, they gave me an additional 20% off my replacement order for my trouble.
I miss Chicago consignment shops. Used to get all sorts of nice stuff there for relatively cheap.
Shopping in Korea annoys me because so many of the clothes assume you are flat chested. I’m a C cup and I can’t even get a decent bra in this country - have to order international from Victoria Secret.
I haven’t bought ANY new clothes this season in an attempt to save some cash. I am just biding my time until I start my new job in the spring, and then I’m going to go nuts and buy all sorts of pretty things.
I really want this coat.
I’ve recently become a fan of coconut oil. A few weeks ago I had the beginnings of a blemish on my face. I mixed a tiny bit of baking soda with some coconut oil and used it as a scrub (an idea I saw on Pinterest). Worked like a charm. My boyfriend complains I smell like a Bounty bar but the coconut oil has kept my skin looking good this winter.
Things I hate: the inexplicable resurgence of 1980s-style clothing, textile patterns, and (most baffling and horrible of all) neon colors; skinny jeans (even on people who have the figure for them – I just hate that silhouette); ankle-strap shoes; pointed-toe shoes; shirts, skirts, and dresses that are short in the front and super long in the back (WTF); animal prints.
Things I love: the explicable resurgence of Art Deco-style jewelry; the Anna-Karenina-inspired resurgence of tsarist-Russia-inspired fashion; wrap bracelets; Chie Mihara shoes (I covet everything on that page); wearing scarves and shawls with everything; sweater-coats with frog closures (hee, I did a GIS on “frog closures” and got this styling dog in the results); sockdreams.com.
I’ve also lost a bunch of weight this year (lindsaybluth, we are bra twins! our starting and ending sizes are the same :)), but I’m putting a moratorium on clothes buying until I hit my goal weight (10 pounds to go, which is significant enough that it will affect clothing fit). I’m just starting to get into wearing skirts and dresses, as I’ve spent the last 15 years hating my legs too much to show them off. I still feel self-conscious, but I’m pushing myself to get over it. Today is my office Christmas party, and I’m wearing a red corduroy a-line skirt that hits above the knee and an oversized sage green faux cashmere sweater from H&M (that I believe was $15). I really like red and green together (especially when they’re not the super-Christmassy ruby red and kelly green), but I feel like society has declared that that combination is for Christmas only and you will get flak for wearing those colors together at any other time of the year. So I’m making the most of December!
My advice to everyone else who has fluctuated in weight this year: go get fitted for a new bra at Nordstrom (not Victoria’s Secret), buy up to one bra there, and then check ebay for the same brand, style, and size. You can save a ton of money that way.
Oh god those shoes are so cute!
Don’t even get me started…if I ever win the lottery, I’m buying her entire line. I covet them so badly, I’m telling you, it almost brings a tear to my eye. Anthropologie sells some of her shoes, but they all retail for more than I’m willing to spend on shoes and I can never catch my size on sale.
Oh my. I love that coat. (And the shoes linked below by gallows fodder).
To all the the gals who have lost weight: congratulations! One caveat, and I do not mean to harsh your mellow - but don’t do what I did and buy a whole new wardrobe to match your new figure, or rather, don’t get rid of all your bigger clothes. I lost enough weight that nothing I had fit so I went a little crazy (not too bad because I worked for a fashion retailer and got a ridiculous discount)and got rid of my old stuff to make room, and also because I vowed I would never be that(bigger) size again. Well, shit happens. I haven’t gained back all the weight but I do wish I’d kept some of the things that weren’t ginormous. Enjoy the new you, keep up the good work, but just remember to keep a few “backup” items.
On a more positive note, I recommend University Medical’s *24 Hour Facelift *cream. I’ve been using it about a month and it really does firm and plump the skin.
Seconded. I can’t really wear cute shoes in the winter because we live on a hill and once it snows it turns into Mt. Everest for the rest of the winter. Thankfully our new house is on flatter land.
Do you ladies change up your makeup with the seasons? I used to do that when I was younger but now I’m too lazy. I stick religiously to my Bobbi Brown neutrals palette - one lasts me at least a couple years.
Sometimes I’ll change my blush color (lighter colors for spring and summer).
I went by Old Navy yesterday looking for some long sleeved shirts and almost bought a fox sweater just because of this thread - they didn’t have any mediums though! I bought the owl instead.
Ha ha, that is hilarious. Sure, I wear tall boots over skinny jeans too, but these women need to be stopped. I generally break this combo out when there’s wintery weather, because cute + practical = key when it’s cold and wet out, but I swear these girls all summer long are counting down til winter so they can break out their clonewear. It hasn’t even been cold where I live and we’ve had no measurable snow this season, and still every single girl in yuppie town is wearing brown tall boots over her jeans.
Yay <3
Yes, I change my makeup with the season. Warm weather is for coral lips and neutral eyes. Cold weather is for plummy eyes and darker more neutral lips. I also change my perfume. Hermes Jardin Sur le Nil for hot weather, Armani Prive Ambre Soie for cold weather, Hermes Jardin en Mediterranee for wet springtime and other in-betweens. Don’t have a really good fall perfume. Actually I like L’Occitane Notres Fleurs Cedre, but the cap on my bottle is stuck so I didn’t wear it this year.
I picked up some really cute sweater dresses on after Christmas clearance this week.
I’m focusing in on trying clothing that does not look good on the hanger because, as I’m learning, it often looks much better on a real person. I (think) I first noticed that at a high end consignment store: many of the clothes look downright bad on a hanger – but look good on a person (even if they’re not my style or fitted truly well, their comfort and cut cannot be denied).
I’m learning to take a chance on clothes that look weird on the hanger or look like they wouldn’t look good on me, too. Losing weight after being a certain size for so long has made it really hard for me to tell what silhouettes work and don’t work on me now.
The dress I’m wearing right now, in fact, was a purchase I made after such an experiment – it’s this one in dark grey, and it looks better on me than on the model, if I do say so myself, since I’m curvier.
It looked pretty shapeless on the hanger, and I never thought swing dresses would suit my shape, but with a colorful wide belt it looks great on.
Edit: I want to ask you all – if you click on the link for the dark grey dress, you’ll see the model wearing brown-and-blue tights with it. Am I the only one who doesn’t get the trend of deliberately clashing colors? (I’m wearing the dress with purple cardigan, black tights, lavender belt, and pewter flats, so not super “matchy matchy”, but I think those tights in the picture look awful.)
I’m kicking myself for spraying my coat with Chanel’s new Coco Noir the other day, because now I can’t stop sniffing my coat sleeve whenever I wear it and I really can’t justify to myself spending $100 on perfume. I’m just going to have to contrive to swing by the mall to refresh my coat sleeve every once in a while…
And now so do I, but I think I’ll get it for my daughter instead. ![]()
I am lusting after these boots so, sooooo hard. I think they might be my birthday present to myself.
Ladies, look at my new accessory!

Nice! I love a simple, classic ring. Now, weren’t you already engaged, and this is finally-got-the-ring engaged? Anyway, congratulations!
Banana Republic has released their early spring collection and I’m crazy about it. Strong patterns in navy and white paired with pops of strong, clear citrus… clean classic lines and straightforward gold jewelry. YAY I LOVE IT! Adding white jeans, a yellow blazer, and an orange cardigan to last year’s deep indigo jeans, striped shirts, and color pop capris. I’ve got a gold bucket bag and gold jewelry. Now if we can just get the vacation to South Beach booked…
!!! It’s beautiful! Congrats!
I’ve been on a Banana Republic post-Christmas sale rack binge. I’ve used about $200 worth of gift cards on two dresses, a skirt, a cardigan, and a T-shirt. It’s been fun.
Shopping question. I need a new purse. (I’m inspired to ask here because I once bought a bag that HazelNutCoffee linked to on Etsy. Thanks!) What brands or stores do you like? General criteria of what I’m looking for: goes over the shoulder - not cross-body, has an easily accessible outside pocket for my phone, and isn’t too big. Any thoughts?
Macy’s carries a brand of bags called Giani Bernini that I’ve always found to be great quality and exceptionally good styling for the prices. Unfortunately it looks like the prices are slowly going up, but my favorite flap satchel has some clearance colors and they’re easy to find new on eBay at much better prices. This is my go-to purse. They don’t have the outside pocket you want, but the flap has a magnetic closure that makes it really easy to open and close the purse.
Having said that… for several years now my summer purse has been a bucket bag from J. Crew and my winter purse has been the Maura satchel by Brighton. I love 'em both very, very much. Neither are still available though.
