Is anyone watching this show? It’s running in New Zealand and it’s a lot of fun.
What’s special is that they (and others you meet during the show) are mortal incarnations of Norse gods. The first series started with young Axl’s 21st birthday when he goes through the family initiation ritual and discovers that he is Odin. He also learns that he has a quest that, should he complete it (or die before completing it), will have a huge impact on all the gods.
The second series which just began airing (episode 5 is scheduled to air this week), continues the plot lines begun last year but seems to be headed to darker places, particularly subplot dealing with Axl’s brother Ty (Hodur) and his relationships with his goddess wife and his human true love.
If anyone else is watching, I’d love to discuss it. I’m only up to episode 2, but I have eps 3 and 4 and can catch up in a hurry. Still, spoiler boxes are probably a good idea.
I started watching season 1 recently, but it’s the sort of thing my dementia addled mother can’t tolerate, so I was sky plussing it, but I’m running out of space on the hard drive so I had to delete it
I did enjoy what I saw of it, looked like a completely mental show!
The first season was fun. But in S2, this show has lost focus. The whole search plot has sort of petered out. The first season conveyed the setting of mythology in the modern world. But this season, so far, feels like a sitcom with some intrigue added in.
And obviously they wanted to keep the whole ensemble from S1, so there’s some awkward transitions for the antagonist characters from S1, which makes for incoherent motivations on their part.
Also, does it look like there’s a budget problem? Some of the actors, especially the one playing Anders, seem to have their screentime rationed.
As I wrote earlier, I’ve only watched the first two episodes of season 2, but so far it has struck me as more serious–or at least more dramatic–than the first season. My opinion on that could well change though. And if it has gone all sit-com, I will be disappointed.
I agree that Agnetha’s switch from Big Bad to loyal opposition was more than a little jarring but I can buy the idea that she hasn’t changed her mind, just her tactics. Or she may just be playing them (her “Can’t we forget that, it’s all in the past” conversation with Axl struck me as awkward and out of character). I wasn’t a huge fan of the sexual politics theme anyway. I do miss the interaction of the four female characters from the first season though. It was some of the funnier stuff on the show.
Dean O’Gorman, who plays Anders is appearing in the Hobbit movies as Fili. That might explain why he’s getting the pregnant actress treatment. He doesn’t have the time. It also explains the beard. I was glad to see Keisha Castle-Hughes back. She’s the only cast member recognizable in the U.S.
I watched it. It took some time, but it grew on me, and I ended up enjoying it quite a lot. It has some unevenness, to be sure, and there were some weird twists that I didn’t think worked all that well, but overall it was pretty fun. It even had a fairly satisfying ending. I’d recommend it.
