The Amazing Race, 10/28/12

Oh dear, no thread for TAR yet. Is this season getting too predictable?

Taxi Assessment:

Stuck in the Desert and Officially Detained - or, Philiminated with extreme prejudice.
Rob & Sheila and Amy & Daniel and Caitlin & Brittany and Gary & Will - Already eliminated.

Flat Tire - or, not likely to get anywhere soon.
No one.

Stopping for Gas - or, not broken-down, exactly, but not a good sign.
Rob & Kelley (holding steady) -

“Rapido! Por Favor?” - or, making meaningless ineffectual comments from the back seat, but in no immediate danger.
Jaymes & James (holding steady) - Oops; serious problem with counting in this episode. In addition, they don’t seem to be pacing themselves well: they were looking seriously wiped after the bamboo task. Granted it’s heavy work in a hot climate, but the smaller, older, and more feminine teams handled it better than Jaymes & James did. Although, I have to say, I’m liking this team’s self-deprecating humor: it makes them more likable, and, I think, helps keep them a little less tense in a stressful race.
Trey & Lexi (holding steady) - I’m really warming to Lexi - I thought she might be one of those high-maintenance deadwood female teammates, but she turned in an impressive perfomance at the bamboo task. I’m not sure if that will translate into winning enough to make the final three, though.
Josh & Brent (holding steady) - Navigation problems at the beginning of the episode dropped this team a few places, and problems with the Roadblock dropped them solidly into last place. The (not unexpected) non-elimination leg saved them, and the near-certain airport bunching at the beginning of the next leg will also help them out. The additional task in the next leg will be a time sink, though, even if it’s only a few minutes, so Josh & Brent will have to hope for another team to make a stumble. If they get through the next leg they should be in pretty good shape.

In the Passing Lane - or, ahead of the pack, but not quite comfortably.
James & Abba (holding steady) - James & Abba’s decision to take the Fast Forward last week looks really good right now. With no bunching point in this episode, they easily parlay their lead from the last episode into another first-place finish in this episode. On the one hand, their placement stems from only a single decision, so it’s hard to argue that it’s indicative of future performance. On the other hand, (ignoring personal issues) this does give them two low-stress legs in a row, so they should be in a relatively better position compared with the other teams.
Natalie & Nadiya (holding steady) - It’s important to remember that Natalie & Nadiya still hold the Express Pass they won back in the second episode. Although that may or may not have a huge strategic value, depending on how they use it, it surely has a huge psychological value: they know they can simply bail on a task if it gets too hard or if they’re running behind. They’ve been racing well, and with the additional Express Pass advantage they look likely to make it to the final three.

Cruisin’ with Earl - or, drivin’ on the shoulder, takin’ shortcuts, and generally kickin’ butt.
Abbie & Ryan (holding steady) - I don’t quite understand Ryan’s seeming obsession with scoring the record for most first-place finishes. First place in any one leg is nice, but it should take a back seat to getting first place in the final leg. Still, this team is racing better than the rest, so they should be favorites in the final three. As an example, they chose what turned out to be the quicker Detour option, in opposition the the conventional wisdom that the “lifting heavy things” option is usually also the quicker option.

Oh, good, I was hoping someone else would start the thread. I hate starting it because I am not nearly clever enough to say anything interesting.

Anyhow, the race is getting kind of predictable for me. “Go here and find this guy who isn’t even particularly difficult to find” seems like such as waste.

I do still love Natalie and Nadiya. Getting the little boy to yell “Go, twinny!!” during the task was hilarious, and the fact that they just dig in to each and every task is awesome. I would love to see them win it all, stretch as that is. And it’s really nice to hear them say things like, “We love it here! Everyone looks like us.” rather than “It stinks. There are too many people. Thy don’t speak English.”

I also did notice Rob knock into some local guy with his big pack and not even say sorry. :frowning: I’m particularly sensitive to anything he does that seems the least bit ugly, though, given that I think he’s a huge douche.

The Jen and Keisha strategy seemed to work out just fine for them. Lag behind but don’t be last. Have everyone else help you (i.e. give you the answers) during all of the tasks and then finish the last leg first. The may have been the most undeserving winners ever but hey still won the mollion dollars.

I felt bad for the poor guy selling vegetables on the corner of the route that the bamboo teams were taking. It looked like he got whacked in the head with one of the long bamboo pieces about three different times!

I’m always amazed when one team seems to have so much trouble with a simple task. Why did the goat farmers have such a hard time finding the taxi stand at the beginning of the leg?

I figured they were setting up Ryan for a fall when they had him mention Dave and Rachel early in the show… sounded like part of that bit was redubbed as well.

Least surprising NEL leg ever… Another long distance travel bunch point ahead! Yay.

It seemed really odd that they had designated taxis (which I assume means designated drivers) on this leg and then a “cryptic clue” to the pit stop. As all of the race-selected drivers recognized the picture, using a picture instead of just words seemed silly.

The twins are good racers, they do just dig in and do it. They chatter a lot, but the job gets done. And I liked the chipendale’s line something like “if you’re going to be dumb, you better be tough.” It should have been the episode title.

I was pretty surprised at so many people opting for the bamboo task. I wonder if they were not thinking of construction-style bamboo and instead thought they’d be lifting a few bundles of sticks. I also would have thought the folks suffering from heat exhaustion would have decided to go indoors. (Granted the jute factory would likely have been little relief, but some of them might have given it a shot.)

I think this race hasn’t been all that interesting so far as we’re still getting rid of the dead weight teams, even if they mostly aren’t bad. Nobody’s really annoying (the twins are annoying in one sense, but they seem mostly likable people) but there isn’t much distinction. I’m pretty sure I don’t know the difference between the non-monster trucker male-female teams (other than that one did better this week by choosing the smart task).

I actually liked the tasks for this episode.

I think a part of why this race has been underwhelming is the lack of drama. There isn’t a clear asshole-to-his-girlfriend dude, or a break-down-and-cry-at-every-opportunity wife, or we-hate-them-and-we-don’t-care-if-they-know-it dynamic between teams.

The personalities this season are fairly vanilla, and it’s making me apathetic to all the teams.

One of the reasons I began watching this show a few years ago was Phil’s commentaries on the locale: the snippets of history; the sweeping panoramas (however brief); the highlighting of custom, culture, and lifestyle that is so foreign to me, and yet so intriguing.

I think the producers would be well-advised, at least to cater to my interest, when saddled with such “normal”-seeming teams of racers, to spend additional airtime and effort on the scenery, history and peoples of whatever country they happen to be in at the moment.

Why was Abbie so ticked off at Ryan at the end? I missed a few minutes, but she was really rolling her eyes at him and flinching from him.

He’s being unnecessarily competitive (which merits a eye rolling in my book). His first reaction on finding out that they were in second place was to express disappointment that they weren’t in first.

Did I hear it right and Jaymes & James are skipping meals in order to save money? Or were they joking? It just seems like an idiot thing to do. As far as I can tell, racers are usually given adequate money to complete the leg and they seemed to be the ones having the most trouble with the heat.

As chaotic as Bangladesh is, the Amazing Racers managed to contribute even more chaos by carrying long bamboo poles through the crowded streets. Why did all but one team choose the hauling task?

While I still like Abbie, Ryan seems kind of a douche. Your only objective in this race is to not come in last on each leg and to come in first in the final leg. Anything else is just wasted energy.

I got a new respect for Josh and Brent. They were so sweet to one another.

As much as I cringe at some of the drama of the last few seasons, I wonder if deliberately not casting drama types is part of The Amazing Producers’ grand plan. Think about it: Most reality TV shows depend on trainwrecks to pull in viewers. Perhaps TAR is trying to set itself apart by deliberately NOT casting those people who attract and/or have ongoing drama. Maybe they’re attempting to appeal to everyday people like you and me – people who play it straight and run the race just for the sake of running the race and winning the money with a healthy dose of good old competitive spirit thrown in.

People cringed when Brendon and Rachel ran TAR, for example. They cringed because on BB Rachel was the ultimate drama queen and people expected her to continue the drama on TAR. She had her moments, but she and Brendon ran a decent race for the most part. IMO she didn’t bring half the drama llama I’ve seen on other seasons.

Oh, I miss those too! CBS must have cut that, as well as Elimination Station. Money saving measures, I presume. Obviously they didn’t pull in the number of hits as does, say, Survivor’s “Ponderosa”.

I wouldn’t mind that myself, except that network TV tends to play straight at the middle, and the majority of the middle (again, IMO), would clamor for them to stop the nonsense and just let everyone race.
