The Amazing Race 10/30/11: "We Love Your Country Already; It Is Very Spacious"

I have no idea what’s going on with the schedule…I didn’t receive a preliminary Eye-lert for tonight, but it looks like CBS has the doubleheader tonight, so it’s likely to run long. If I get the email after the game but before the Race, I’ll update.

I’ll bet the title quote is from Ma & Pa.

Steelers game just ended, 7:25PM.

CALLED IT! Hehe…

Lawrence can seriously just go suck rocks. God, he’s such an ass.

Best possible ending, I thought…I didn’t want either one of those last two teams to go. They’re really front-loading the NELs this season, though.

Has anyone calculated how many NELs there will be this season?

I was pretty surprised that Cathi opted not to pay the driver in the first place. I did think she was very sweet at the sewing task. “Show me how handsome…” I thought it was weird that Marcus thought his grandmother’s experience as a seamstress would translate into him being good at that task, but I guess it worked out OK.

I think God must be an Amazing Race fan:

We lost our power late Saturday night. It came back at 8:15!

And then we lost our cable – at 9:45!

Given that TAR was on from 8:30 to 9:30, that’s quite a coincidence.

Unfortunately, I thought this episode was dull. Watching the guys shove big bales around on handtrucks got old very fast, and nobody seems to have any trouble with either assembling the carton trucks or the sewing task.

And another NEL? That’s number 3, and don’t they usuall only have three total??

It’s so damned weird–I want to like Lawrence for some reason. He’s been a jackass the last two eps, but I want to like him and I don’t know why.

Cathi was saying something about “At the end! At the end!” when Bill wanted to pay the driver. I can only assume she thought there would be another task, even though they had been told to carry the beds to Phil at the Pit Stop.

Interesting contrast in how Laurence & Zac were so happy to be merely fourth and Ernie & Cindy looked rather dejected at being just behind them. Partly this was because they just got passed up, but it does seem to reflect their race attitudes. In all fairness, teams don’t have to be first all the time, and it’s possible to get worn out doing so. I see these two teams at about the same level of competence, but C & E have much more desire.

So are we calling producer shenanigans on this? After all, Team NFL was saved by a suspiciously fortuitous non-elimination leg.

The happiest place on Earth is not Disneyland. Apparently, it is actually a tobacco warehouse on the outskirts of Lilongwe, Malawi.

Props to Bill for a good leg. I’d have figured an ex-NFL tight end would kick ass at hauling heavy stuff, but Gramps held his own.

The first leg was non-elim, but then two teams were knocked out on the second leg, so that kinda cancels out. So probably one non-elim left.

I heard her say “Only if he asks” when Bill asked if they should pay the driver. But I was distracted to maybe that was someone else?

It’s possible I’ve mixed up the two teams that didn’t pay. Amani might’ve had the “At the end!” instead.

That was Cathi.

I’m amazed at some of the things that didn’t matter, much, in the end. Order of departure? Airport bunching? Collisions in the tobacco warehouse? Stopping to play with kids? Trouble with the sewing machine? “Stolen” truck? Broken down taxi? Not a single one of them mattered. In the end, the only thing that seemed to matter was paying the truck driver and being able to carry that bed.

Rickshaw assessment coming shortly.

I would guess that some of the racers thought the tucks and drivers were provided by TAR. The warehouse guys seemed to be directing them to trucks (“he told us to take the green truck”) and they didn’t have any taxi symbol or discussion of rates first.

It seems to me it would’ve been much more efficient to stack the beds and have each team members carry an end than try to carry a whole bed yourself. I’m 5’ tall - carrying a 6’ bed would be hard.

StG

Ha! Right? I mean, despite the odor and poor air quality that the contestants were complaining about. Oh, and the backbreaking work that the warehouse workers have to do all day, not just until they’ve moved 10 bales. And the fact that Lilongwe has an extremely high rate of HIV/AIDS among its citizens, high rates of unemployment, and severe deforestation.

Other than that, it’s nonstop joy, I’m sure.

Cindy seems so very, very bitter to me

So are they going to have any actual elimination legs this year? At this rate, it’s going to take 50 episodes to get through the season.

Actually, they’re right on track with the NELs. They usually have three per season, and they don’t usually begin to use them until the middle. They’ve been front-loading them this time. And there is one left, since the NEL on the first ep was more or less canceled out by the double elimination in the second. So we’ve had three, but one didn’t count because of the double after it. One more to go.

Cathi had the right idea, carrying the bed on her back instead of in her arms. The old folks really rocked this leg, and were only hurt by being in the back ot the plane (so getting out of the airport last) and then not paying the truck driver.

Anyone else notice that the first driver that had to be paid asked for 7000 but then Bill and Cathi’s wanted 10,000? :dubious:

The father is an asshat. Kept going on and on about women and sewing.

And Cathi embarrassed herself with her comment about how the people of Malawi are so happy (!).
