The Amazing Race - 4.4.10 (open spoilers)

It’s a good thing all the racers got there before he drowned.

He’s Steve Smith. Played a little at the major league but has had a long career as a coach. He was third base coach for the Phillies in 2008 when they won the World Series. He’s currently w/ the Indians.

Yay, Cowboys! I love their laid-back, fun-loving attitude. Not that they aren’t competitive, and of course they were upset when it looked like they were going to be eliminated for a dumb decision. But it was fleeting, and they didn’t freak out on this leg and start sniping at each other.

It’s too bad Allie gave up on the flag thing so quickly (it seemed). Unless she had some neck condition or something, I think it was a really weak move on her part - it sounded like she had already decided she “couldn’t” do it as they pulled up in the cab.

And that was after they did something I thought was laudably sensible. Having made a mistake and gotten turned around, they stopped and asked a local which detour was faster to get to, and chose that one. That could have saved them, if they hadn’t flaked out on the task.

Anyway, I’d be OK with any of the remaining folks in the final three, except Brent and Caite. It’s not just that they’re dumb, it’s that they’re whiny jerks. That’s also my problem with Brandy, but she seems to be improving at least. So the fact that they’re obnoxious just makes it fun to laugh at them when they’re stupid. I noticed the “license” misread too - DUH!

I hope the cowboys win, I just love them. But the cops would be OK too. The brothers irritate me at times, but I give them points for pulling off that champagne glass jerry-rig.

I just watched it again with my kids, and the guru was definitely moving around just to screw with them. Specifically, Carol and Louie were building on their floats at the same time, and when Carol brought hers out, the guru was shallow enough that she only got wet halfway up her calves. When Louie brought his out a few minutes later, he had to wade out to waist deep water to reach the guru.

Wow! Hella comeback by the Cowboys.

How many teams have gone through the ‘not eliminated, but have to complete a roadblock in the next stage’ process? I know they used to have ‘lose all your money’ and other, different, punishments for non-elim.

First 4 seasons had no penalty for non-elimination. As a matter of fact, for the first 2 seasons, the clue to the Pit Stop always said “the last team to arrive will be eliminated” EXCEPT for non-elims. This led to a situation where two teams in last place casually approached the finish line when they had figured this out, instead of the better-for-TV desperate race to survive.

Seasons 5 introduced the non-elimination muggings, first taking all their money, and starting season 7, also taking all of their possessions, except for the clothes on their back. This forced the penalized team to beg for money, often in places where the people are very poor.

Season 10 and 11 replaced the muggings with the “Marked For Elimination” rule, which required the non-eliminated team to finish the next leg in first place or incur a 30-minute penalty. The current “Speed Bump” rule was introduced in season 12. This being season 16, that makes the cowboys the 10th team to have endured a Speed Bump.

Nice round-up, thanks. I was just curious because Phil made such a big deal of them having bee worst to first for the first time ever, and I wasn’t sure if that was actually much of a thing, really, or if a lot of teams had ever had that opportunity.

Zut, I think you missed a least one, from last season. The poker chicks were not eliminated on leg 1. They went to Japan, had to eat some Wasabi, and herd some tourists from location to another. And they lost some tourists.

Their speed bump in the next leg was to serve soup.
