The Americans Season 3

well it’s still only a guess…

[/spoiler]

Just to be on the safe side though, I will put my tiny little speculation in spoliers before I make this post.

The only thing I can say to this (having just seen it and typically I need a few hours to think about anything dealing with this show) is about Henry.

I would guess that Henry might well make an announcement. But I’d guess it might be for comic relief and he might announce that Paige has gone nuts and needs to be institutionalized or something equally bizarre. But not that he knows anything about what his parents are really doing.

I don’t really know much about Twitter and so I’d like to ask if you could explain what it means when you said, "Joe Fields just faved my tweet of the evening.

Can you tell us (or maybe just me) what was in your tweet? Or was it this post that I’ve quoted. If memory serves, you only get 140 characters in a tweet. Is that right? so maybe this post of yours would be too long?

**Also. I’d like to ask SlackerInc **if he could explain why it would be right to spoiler tag some speculation?

Do I have that correct? Is UTJ really just making a speculation? If so, why would there be any need to put it in spoiler tags?

Thank you in advance to UTJ and SlackerInc.

BTW … I’m so excited! Tonight is Finale night! So exciting!
P.S. I have no idea why there are three spoiler boxes in my post. I only have two sets of tags. Very strange!

Oops! I figured out why there are 3 spoiler boxes in my above post.

Pls disregard my dumb comment.

Duh!

P.S. **Congratulations **to Up_The_Junction. That is really wonderful. I’m very proud of you. For whatever that is worth. **A great accomplishment **for any of us that love this show as much as we do!

So Martha doesn’t appear at all, Paige’s meeting with her grandmother might as have happened off-screen, Zinaida unmasked, and Paige just confessed to Pastor Tim. That was definitely the major development of the episode, but is he going to believe her? It does sound like something a schizophrenic would say; and Paige having mental problems is a lot more plausible than her parents being deep cover Russian spies. I liked the expression on Phillip’s face when he realized he just apologized to the corpse in the suicide note.

They ended it like that? They ended it like that?! THEY ENDED IT LIKE THAT?!

Cliffhanger rage aside, great episode. I couldn’t believe

Paige told on them to the Pastor!

Predictions for next year (next year? Argh!)

Pastor Tim assumes Paige is having some sort of delusional episode, and tells her parents she needs a doctor. Elizabeth then tells Gabriel (which Phillip will protest and be reluctant to do, believing they can solve the problem themselves). After that . . . well, the first thing that comes to mind is Gabriel will tell them to kill Paige, or some less drastic alternative that neutralizes her. And that’s when things’ll get fun . . .

Oh, and was anyone else

kind of let down by the way they handled Martha? I mean, I get that they couldn’t have fit too much with her in the episode, but still. We know she’s alive, but have no idea how she reacted, etc. Could she really still stay with Phillip after the wig incident? I mean, I get that she’s Martha, but even for her that would be remarkably stupid . . .

Oh, and I’m one of those people who rolls their eyes at people who cry about TV shows. But when Elizabeth was talking to her mother, there must have been a lot of dust in the air . . .

Aren’t the Jennings’ calls monitored, some kind of way? I have the feeling that someone heard Paige’s call to Pastor Tim, and that a sudden and tragic accident is going to happen to the “good Pastor” in the Season 4 premier first. Then, when Paige indicates that she’s become even more resolved to drop dime, that’s when Gabriel will tell P&E that he’s gotten orders for them to sanction Paige. And then, that’s when the fireworks happen.

Vision TV (Canada) shows Columbo episodes broken into halves four nights a week at 8:00 pm. The one that was on Wednesday night was the late (2003) “Columbo Loves the Nightlife,” in which Matthew Rhys is the villain who kills a guy by hanging him and then leaves a suicide note on his computer.

Two hours later on The Americans, Matthew Rhys is the villain who kills a guy by hanging him and then leaves a suicide note on his computer…

Weird, or what?!? :dubious:

Yes, I know about “synchronicity,” thank you very much!

Very odd. I thought we’d seen the last of Martha. The only time a villain unmasks himself before someone is when he’s going to kill them. Plus, not only was there an accomplice parked outside her building, a great big suitcase was on her bed, just waiting for her to be stuffed into it. I must admit I was disappointed to learn in the last couple of minutes that she’s still alive; maybe she’ll off herself before the beginning of the next season. (Can she really have gone to her parents? Is Phillip really stupid enough to let her go there?)

My biggest disappointment was a total lack of resolution of the Maurice & Lisa situation.

As far as Paige goes …

As between Paige and the Pastor, Paige is the much bigger problem and if the actress’ name didn’t appear in the opening credits, I would think that she needs to be silenced more than the Pastor.

Why? Because the pastor is not the problem. He may tell someone that Paige needs a psychiatrist. So what? But if Paige is not silenced, she may well repeat that her parents are Russian agents until it reaches someone who will understand it is true. Like Stan.

Then the fireworks will begin.

No. Seriously. That can never happen. Except maybe in the very final episode of the show.

Concerning the guy Philip killed:

I must’ve not been paying attention at a crucial point, but who was he in relation to Martha, so that his “suicide” would take the heat of the investigation off of her?

Over all, a good season, but seemed to lack something the previous two seasons had. I kinda felt cheated by the way the whole Martha thing panned out… Some real tension was presented, but it never seemed to climax or come to a gripping resolution.

I admit that E visiting her mother was pretty touching.

Wasn’t he the guy in the FBI office who told her he’d been grilled for three hours? And didn’t Phillip plant the remote receiver from the bug in his apartment?

The guy who P killed was the guy who took care of all the computer stuff in the FBI office and the mail robot. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

So, his suicide makes it look like he planted the bug in the pen.

But why is P going back to those stupid EST meetings? It’s a complete puzzle to me. Surely he isn’t falling for that B.S.

They are just a cult really. P is a lot smarter than to fall for that. Could he be looking to F Stan’s ex-wife? That would be really, really stupid. That would eventually come out into the open and then P would **really **be F’d.

Damn Terentii!

I knew someone else would post that info at the same time I did. Check the time stamps on our posts? Both are exactly 11:43 PM.

And, Yes. P did plant that remote receiver in his apt.

The previous season finales both ended with a BANG!

This season’s finale ended with Paige whimpering. The show runners got us once again.

I fully expected someone to get killed - most likely Maurice. But there were also several other candidates.
Hey UTJ! – Feel free to use my line about the season ending with a whimper instead of a bang in your thing if you like. I would be honored if you did.

Martha will crack if she comes back from “vacation” only to learn that her co-worker has been identified as the one who planted the bug and is now dead. Even she should be able to put two and two together by now.

“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it. I promise!” Yeah, right. All you have to do to get me off the hook is kill one of my acquaintances. :smack:

Wow, just wow. OK, we had Mrs. B and Nina, but no Martha. Phillip feels lousy over killing the computer guy to keep Martha’s butt out of the sling. Maybe that’s why he’s doing the EST thing because, at some level, it’s working for him. I thought maybe he was contacting the woman who had sex with Stan, but I guess she’s out of the picture. Surprising since the actress was kind of a name. I don’t think he wants to have sex with Mrs B., but hey, if he did, it’s just a case of like father, like son.

Oleg’s plan worked just the way I said it would upthread, but they don’t get the payoff. Still, Nina seems to be doing OK on her own. Love the way the big dog stepped on Gaad to support Stan.

The center would never order P+E to kill Paige, they’d have another agent who wasn’t emotionally invested do it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Henry does know more than he’s letting on. Paige is smart but Henry is a boy and has probably gone through every inch of that house when P+E were gone, and they’re gone a lot! Boredom plus curiosity equals trouble. (I know when I was a kid, I looked everywhere in our house but all I ever found were my dad’s old girlie mags.)

Where did the mother meeup take place? W Germany or USSR?

It looked like Germany to me. That would have been the logical compromise, since Elizabeth’s handlers were adamantly opposed to the meeting.

Bring her into Berlin, put her in an unmarked car, drive her to the hotel, and then it’s back to Smolensk. Easy-peasy.

(As an aside, the only hotels in Russia that have bidets are the five-star ones.)

Could be a KGB rest house? Bringing a cancer afflicted woman halfway across Europe to sneak her into a hotel at the crack of dawn would raise suspicion. I get the feeling that quite a bit was cut.

I felt it was a fairly ordinary episode, until the final moments. The editing of the activities of the four members of the Jennings family was superb, depicting the four lives of the family members and how they appear to be splitting into four different directions.

It is now impossible for this family to remain intact. Something has to give.

Insofar as predictions…here goes:

Octarine, you may remember I put forth the idea of the ultimate confrontation between Phillip and The Centre, and how that it would become very interesting. I have to tell you that after viewing the season finale, I’m more convinced than ever that’s what’s going to happen, and it seems some other posters are beginning to go in that direction.

I agree that this confrontation will be over Paige, and also with the posters who predicted that Paige will somehow have to be dealt with. As one poster put it, the Jennings’s phones must be being monitored, especially now that P and E have told someone that Paige knows. There’s not a chance that the Centre won’t have someone listening in on their conversations. After all, it’s in their best interests to know what’s going on inside that household.

Another indication of a greater rift between Phillip and the Centre is that it’s obvious Phillip may be beginning to crack. He’s closer than he has ever been to just saying “enough”. Earlier there was disagreement about Phillip having qualms about his job. Is there any doubt about that now?

I also think that Henry will figure much more prominently next season…I can’t shake that line from last week’s show about Paige “protecting Henry from a bear”. It also proved to be foreshadowing, as I predicted, of Paige not keeping her secret.

So we have the makings of incredible tension next season. A possible confrontation of Phillip vs. The Centre with Paige’s future at stake. The only question is, what will Elizabeth do if that happens? Will the uber-communist side of her prevail, pitting her against Phillip? Or will she put family first?
