The anti-Trump resistance has become exhausted

Exactly Horatius.

There is no changing a MAGA’s mind. Getting them to admit that they might have been wrong is not possible. They are in this for the long ride. But they don’t know where the bus is going, heh, it comes for them.

My BIL is now spouting about the documents that Biden had, which he discovered and returned comparing it to Trump trying to keep the ones he had. Shit, Trump had a lawyer sign an affidavit saying he didn’t have any all the while Trump was doing a very poor job of trying to hide them.

It’s comparing and apple to a crook.

Let the crazy unreachable people talk amongst themselves and get out and VOTE. Or mail it in in my case.

My Trump supporting mother is the same way. I tried explaining to her the difference between Trump and both Pence and Biden. That Trump willfully held on to documents as evidenced by his refusal to return them and his lies that he no longer had such documents whereas Trump and Pence both informed authorites and cooperated in returning those documents. All my mother can reply with is, “They all had documents.”

I don’t bother trying to convince Trump supporters of anything these days. I’ll call out their bullshit from time-to-time, but it’s not with the expectation that they’ll change their minds. His core supporters are beyond hope.

Exactly. I have a friend that I’ve know for a long time. She runs a non-profit animal rescue farm which I donate 10 dollars a month to because I believe in what she does and know deep down she has a good heart, but she is so far down the rabbit hole that I have no way to talk her out of it. I almost never reply to any of her FB posts anymore because it’s pointless. She is addicted to RW propaganda, thinks Trump and Elon are the best people in the world, and literally parrots every bit of RW glurge that crosses her path. At this point only she can find her way out and that is only if she wants to find her way out. She literally states that X (Twitter) is the only reliable source of news available now. It’s beyond hope. I am not a cult deprogrammer.

Schrödinger’s documents?

I agree that there is Trump fatigue even among those who voted for him twice. And that may be why we’re seeing the Russian bots swarm in ever greater numbers in places like Xitter; getting Trump elected is very important to Vladdy and he senses, along with the despairing right wing social media that I see (which admittedly isn’t much), that trouble is looming in November.

Yes, very important getting Trump elected. But even if it doesn’t work Putin would love to continue to divide the US. A win win for him.

I’m one of them. I don’t dislike Biden but I would much rather have a younger, stronger force to vote far. But at this point all I care about is voting against Trump.

Likewise. My wife is more upset that Biden is running, but of course will vote for him. There where years to get ready for this. Also, if we had a younger, stronger force, might get two terms. It’s going to take a long time to clean up this mess.

Shuck and durn, pardner, I truly do, dad-blast it.

I suspect most of the people who loathed tRump before will loathe him now. The problem is that the Democrats are proposing to run an elderly man who does not have the confidence of his own base. We have other options. Could we choose one of the better ones, please? Klobuchar, Warren, Kaine: any of these would likely beat tRump. Why not?

There are no better candidates than Biden. He is the incumbent who has already beaten Trump once. Kobuchar, Warren, and Kaine are not better choices than Biden at this time.

Amen. I did this during Covid. My blood pressure is lower now.

Because Biden is the incumbent, and also because it’s now very, very, very much too late for even thinking about that.

Which presidential candidate has a proven record of beating Trump in an election?
Right, that’s Biden. Let’s go with that guy this time.

I don’t know what the name for this fallacy is, but selective-survivorship bias sounds closest.

It would be like if there were two options to kill a housefly: Hit it with a fly swatter, or throw a bowling ball at it.

The pro-swatter advocates point out the benefits of the swatter, but you go with the ball. And it works. So the second time a housefly shows up, you insist on the ball again, saying the swatter is “unproven” and only the ball has a “proven record of hitting the fly.”

No, it’s more like: Biden has already beaten Trump. I bet he can do it this time, too.
Call it a fallacy if you’d like.

Just out of curiosity … who’s your “fly swatter” who easily could have beaten Trump in 2020 and is much more likely to beat Trump here in 2024?

I can keep a bowling ball next to me as well as a swatter and use them to take care of my fly problems at my leisure. i.e. I can apply the scientific method here and test things out building a robust set of data with numbers and outcomes. I cannot do this for a presidential election. I cannot keep multiple candidates close by and throw them at elections in order to decide which one is the best to use. You’re comparing apples to oranges. Or willfully retained documents to documents that weren’t willfully retained.

Wow, an analogy that does not suck. Bravo!

This is the right analogy but you have it reversed. People are asking for a bowling ball that has no chance of even being launched when a fly-swatter that’s known to work is available.

Trump has no fear of an unknown bowling ball, but Biden beat him and therefore lives in his head every day. Every move Trump makes is shadowed by the knowledge that he lost. Who did he lose to? Not some imaginary bowling ball, but to the swatter that knocked him out of the sky. He’s being driven insane by the thought that Biden will beat him again and it affects every word and every tweet.

People don’t want another Trump/Biden. I get it. I don’t want it either. Nonetheless that is reality. Given that reality, what do we know right now? Biden is doing everything Democrats want and Trump is bleeding supporters at the edge with his criminality. Will that hold for another nine months? I don’t have a clue. And neither do the poor souls who have to fill “column inches” with something.
