The anti-Trump resistance has become exhausted

Klobuchar has the best chance of this group. Warren had her shot, she made the mistake of setting out plans and being intelligent. Voters don’t want that. Kaine added ZERO to his run with Hillary. Biden had beaten the monster once- he can do so again.

Annoying as the constant Democratic requests for funds is, just imagine how much worse it is for grifter in chief trumpy fundraising on the back of every little perceived slight and the slow turning wheels of justice. You think you have it bad from Pelosi?!?

I’ve heard that one theory of why head to head polls aren’t much better for Biden yet, is that a lot of voters have yet to accept that it will be a rematch, so they are still holding out for the idea that someone else will ride in with the cavalry to take the mantle over Biden. Once the matchup is finalized and the general campaign begins, a lot of those voters will come home and Biden’s numbers will go up when it’s clear to them its that or Trump.

This thread recently is showing me that there is a lot of merit to this theory.

No doubt about it.

If one is going to complain about Biden – and make statements to the press to the tune of “We’d normally vote Democratic … but Biden has done nothing to earn our vote this time around” – one makes those complaints in February when there is no cost. 999 out of 1,000 people feeling this way right now will still dutifully pull the lever for Biden in November.

But our votes are being taken for granted!” Yeah … so what? Seriously – so what? What’s the alternative looking like in November?

They’re complaining about the stains on the carpet, while the drapes are on fire. Priorities, people!

The voters are like kids that don’t want to see broccoli on their plate. When November comes and the menu is broccoli or dog poop, they’ll eat the broccoli.

…Except that these folks already ate dog poop once before, and in fact 40% of them love it.

I’m a voter. I’m not a resistance fighter. My state is going to Biden no matter what. I could register as a Republican and vote in the primary but it’s held too late to do any good. I just want to go to sleep until November.

The poop-lovers are never going to be swayed by broccoli, and in fact you could swap out broccoli for their favorite food but if it’s being served by the wrong person they’ll gobble up the poop again.

If I can first remove the intensifiers from your post (“easily” and “much”), I will reply:

The fly swatter was not an individual. It was the primary election process where leading Democrats debated each other, and one who was then electorally strong became the nominee.

When there is a first term incumbent candidate, this does not occur. Instead, the incumbent gets the nomination, excepting the unlikely situation where the incumbent does not like the POTUS job. It doesn’t have to do with whether the incumbent is still strong electorally.

People are definitely getting too exhausted to march in the streets, call their Congressmen, argue with strangers on the internet, sign up for phone banks, put out lawn signs.

But most people still hate Trump as intensely as they ever did. People aren’t about to forget that nightmare. He’s only gotten worse since then, and we’ve watched him dodge consequence after consequence. The anti-Trump hatred is more intense, if anything.

Anti-Trump fatigue likely will drive down volunteerism and fundraising. That will have some cost at the ballot box. No doubt that’s true, and it’s troubling. But frankly it’s ridiculous to conflate volunteerism fatigue with voter fatigue. Most of us will still vote against Trump from a hospital bed if we have to. It’s the last-ditch effort to prevent the worst.

Besides, this is an incomplete observation without also observing that MAGA is also diminishing. It’s an extremist fringe, they have no prospect or intention of peeling off median voters, they depend on demographics that are shrinking. They have fewer people and less energy than in 2020, and they got beaten decisively in 2020. Trump is branded “L for loser”, that’s not a recipe for picking up new voters or retaining existing ones.

IIRC – and it was a whole day ago, so who knows? – I was responding to @Velocity’s post that seemed to imply Biden was the bowling ball that beat TrumpFly last time, while some unknown flyswatter could have done the job more easily (and could again this year).

But it’s entirely possible I misunderstood. Carry on.

Broccoli? Why the hell are you trying to sell us on this woke vegetable?

It’s true, I don’t usually get angry with Trump because I’m fatigued. But since January 6th, I’ve voted straight Democratic Party on ever election since then. Until the GOP repudiates and purges MAGA from their ranks I will vote Democrat even if I don’t agree or like them.

You understood. I took the prior back and forth out of context to make my point.

Your vote is appreciated. But what don’t you agree with or like?

I don’t want to hijack the thread, but I’m pretty far right when it comes to firearms.

Your response is also appreciated!

As others have said, someone at the New York Times writes this story once a week. The only thing we can infer from this is that the New York Times still exists.

Just a quick note to say that I heard fundraising figures last night (or this morning, it all runs together): Biden raised 56 million in January to Trump’s 30 million. It was also noted that Trump has lost 200,000 donors since this time in 2020.

Getting box seats in the gas ovens is exhausting too.
