The Apprentice -- 3/11

(I can’t believe how much I’m loving this show . . . )

I had Heidi picked as the next one out from the get-go. Particularly when the other team came up with the advertising idea and the best that Heidi’s team came up with were the pre-paid cards. Sorry, but the rickshaw rides strike me as more of a tourist indulgence than a real means of getting from Point A to Point B. You’re not going to make much money selling rides. So I knew that Heidi’s team was going to lose, and she was getting rude and pissy in front of Carolyn while she was trying to hawk rides. I think Trump, et. al. did not view her as completely blameless in the persistent conflicts with Omarossa. They just got more pissed off at Omarossa first.

I was very shocked that cowboy Troy didn’t think of the advertising thing. Especially when Yankee Bill made the connection to NASCAR. I know I’m stereotyping based on accent, but Troy strikes me as someone who has probably spent a lot of time in a place where NASCAR is followed widely. I think Troy was kicking himself a lot for not thinking of it either.

On a lighter note, my wife and I were wondering what the deal is with Amy’s hair, which seems to go from curly to straight and back to curly in very quick bursts. Does she carry a curler around with her?

Meanwhile, Assaroma’s psychotic streak continues.

Well, that’s because Assaroma is a good person. I know this is so because she said so in the cab ride.

I’m not the litigious type, but if I were Ereka, I’d hit her with a fucking slander suit. Woman needs to be locked up.

All the shows except for the final show down (which will be broadcast live on April 15) are already in the can. So as it stands now, the final two contestants have been determined but not the ultimate winner. I really hope that the last task will be playing poker with The Donald, George and Carolyn.

Troy will make it to the final, as will Amy, but for different reasons. Most of Troy’s defects were on display this week. First of all, he’d make a great manager but a lousy executive. He lacks that streak of ruthlessness that a high-level executive must have. He is also good at coming up with ideas but not always so great at evaluating his ideas objectively. He runs on instinct, not analysis. Remember when he kept trying to figure out how to sell dirt at the flea market? Finally, his “let’s just have fun” thing was, effectively, a concession. There’s a saying among pilots that a good pilot “flies the plane all the way down.” In other words, when your plane is crashing, you never just give up. The same thing should have been true here. Troy didn’t stick with his plan and he didn’t try to come up with a new one — he just gave up. BTW, Troy’s “punch card” idea was basically just an extension of the “regular order” idea he used in the water challenge.

I thought it was interesting that George basically handed Troy the keys. I’m curious to see if he picks them up. George told Troy that he hadn’t seen that he had what it takes to be an executive because he never answered the tough questions straight on but gave lengthy explanations which weakened his position. I wonder if we’ll now see “meaner, nastier” Troy.

Nick is terrible. IMO, he’s actually the worst remaining player. He’s pompous, a lousy team player, not a particularly good salesperson and worse, a lousy negotiator. What was that little speech about how it would have been easy to dicker for only a partial refund but that he did the tough thing by giving it all back? Yeah, that would have been a lot easier than just forking over a full refund.

Bill made his own mistake. It’s obvious that he’s got a problem controlling Nick. Bill should have said, “Nick, deal with it but you’re only authorized to give a refund of $125 and not a penny more.” Nick would have probably blown up about it but making unpopular decisions stick is part a leadership.

Overall, though, Bill did a commendable job. He took a solid idea and solidly executed it. He also efficiently managed the core business. IIRC, his team would have won based on pedicab ride revenues alone. As I posted before, Bill has actual business experience and it shows.

Katrina is, BTW, appallingly awful. The only reason she’s not worse than Nick is that she does less overt public damage. I thought the “how dare you use me as eye candy” thing was just hilarious. Yes, Katrina, people ignore your ideas because they’re stupid ideas. Remember, WWDD? If I’m going to be hauled into the boardroom, I’d much rather be there because I decided to sell advertising than because I decided to dress up like Mickey Mouse.

As for who Troy and Kwame will pick, Survivor-style tactics will now kick in. I doubt if it’ll be Amy especially because Trump criticized that decision before. (Parenthetically, have you seen this quote of hers?[sup]1[/sup] Ouch!) If you’re going for the most useful player, it’d be Bill. If you’re going for the person you’d most like to take into the boardroom with you, it’d be Katrina. But if you think long-term, it doesn’t matter whether you win any particular task, only that you survive to the end. Therefore, you want Katrina on your team. If the other team wins, Katrina takes the hit for you. If the other team loses, one of the stronger players goes and you still have Katrina to take into the boardroom later. Thinking like this, you definitely don’t want Amy on your team since she has, effectively, a free pass for her first board-room trip. (“Why shouldn’t I be fired? Mr. Trump, I’ve never been on a losing team, much less in the boardroom. There’s a reason for that.”) I certainly hope, by the way, that we’ll see Amy and Nick in the boardroom slagging each other off before this is over!

BTW, it would be just like Trump to make Kwame justify choosing Katrina!

[sup]1[/sup]Who do you admire most (personally and/or professionally)?
Donald Trump, of course. And right behind him is my role model, Martha Stewart…You gotta love a woman who knows when to buy, when to sell and when to bake.

Here is the most satisfying article I’ve read about Omarosa: http://www.elitestv.com/NewsPub/2004/Mar/ETV404dce40eb69e.html

re: n-word
I think Omarosa meant that spat where they were all in the helicopter, and she called the rest of the ladies “Babies who need a blanket and a warm milk bottle”, and someone (I think Ereka), said “Well, isn’t that just the pot calling the kettle black.” And of course, Omarosa’s reaction to that was “Oh, so now you’re talking about my COLOR.”

We’re wasting time on a red herring.

(old Southern backwoods expression… picture a vet wasting time examining a stool to determine why a dog has fleas when the dog is in fact dead)

I’m on it, bro!

OH! DOH! thud I forgot about that! You know, Troy would be good for politics because I think he’s pretty good at telling people what they want to hear!

My predictions:

Katrina: She’s GOT to be next. Her days are numbered.

Kwame: Get thee to Survivor. I still think he’d be really great at Survivor and competitions of that ilk. As for the Apprentice, unless Nick combusts, I think he’ll go after Katrina. Who knows though?

Bill: I LOVE Bill! But, while he’s certainly a solid person, I don’t know if he’s what Donald is looking for. Top three though. Oh yes. (Or I hope).

Nick: I’m with Green Bean, part of being a good leader is being a good follower. If you can’t be trusted as a follower, how can you really be trusted as a leader? However, if he were to make the top three or win, it wouldn’t surprise me. It’s hit or miss with him.

Amy: Love her too for reasons already given by others. Katrina is JEALOUS of her. It’s painfully obvious. Great chance of winning.

Troy: Another one I really like. Sometimes he repels me and it’s true that while he can be a hero, he can also fail horribly(didn’t Donald say that everytime he led, the team lost?). Another hit or miss, but he’ll definately be in the top three if he doesn’t win it all.

you read TWoP !!

pardon my dorkiness

Actually they were in a limo, and yes it was Ereka who said that. That’s when I lost any respect for Assaroma.

I’ve been wondering just how much importance Donald places on failure. It seems to me that he might very well respect the attempt far more than he dislikes the result. After all, there was hardly a more spectacular failure in modern economics history than his Wall Street fall and fiasco. He had to rebuild everything, and he’s a man who’s very proud of his life just as it is.

I actually do think Amy is inspired, but not in a flashy way, like Troy. Recall the way she got Marquis Jets to buy advertising; Trump said she used that tactic, selling adverts to businesses with whom she has successfully dealt on other tasks, to quite a good effect in this task. IMO this idea was damn near as inspired as Bill’s idea to sell advertising in the first place. The idea would have been as worthless as the punchcard if they couldn’t convince anyone to buy ads. Think about just how much advertising they had to sell: Nick refunded one advertiser $250, and the team made $3K, right? I can’t give Amy all the credit, but we did pretty much only see her making calls to hook up ad buyers. She’s a star, no doubt about it.

I really think (and hope) that Amy will win. At this point in the game, she’s the only player who hasn’t done something that has really annoyed, offended, or disgusted me in some way. She is unfailingly supportive of her team leader even when she disagrees, and a generator of effective, successful ideas. When she leads, people like to go along with her. I recall her becoming very, very annoyed with Omarosa but is one of the few women never to have a blow-out with her–pretty amazing interpersonal skills IMO. From what I’ve seen, she more than amply deserves to win this show (and I think Trump sees that), and that will be a relief, considering how on most other reality shows, the biggest asshole wins.

I’m actually amazed they only got $3,000 for the advertising. All of these prior contacts knew who they were and what they were doing.

They knew these weren’t just ads on the side of a pedicab. These were ads that would end up with prominent display on a nationally televised show.

Now, obviously they couldn’t know for sure it would be a hit, but I would have been back at Planet Hollywood saying “call your corporate bosses. $15,000 and you get each of our pedicabs covered top to bottom in Planet Hollywood logos for 15 minutes of national prime time exposure.”

I imagine there are rules they have against using the fact that they’re on TV to boost their performance (but how do they explain the cameras when they’re on a sales call to sell a bunch of water?), but with the particular people, they can’t help but be aware of the advertising value of what is happening.

I thought it was Amy’s idea?.?.?

This week’s Entertainment Weekly has a two-page spread on the final candidates, with odds on each – and a comment from both Burnett and Trump on each. They place Troy first at 2-1 and Amy second at 3-1.

Didn’t Bill mention NASCAR first? I thought that was where the idea originated. Am I wrong about that?
