You have no idea what kind of damage an 80 pound dog can do. An 80-pound dog IS a giant, as dogs go, and can exert over 300 pounds of force when it bites. That’s enough for a single bite to require reconstructive surgery, you idiot – like a defensive lineman standing on a pair of sharpened dentures placed over your arm.

So there’s plenty of outrage over this incident, but it’s actually a pretty regular occurrence. In the U.S., cops shoot dogs on average about 2-3 times/week based on what I was seeing on the Facebook page “Please, Mr. Policeman, don’t shoot my dog” before it got so depressing to me that I had to unfollow it. Frequently the dogs are shot without posing a threat–while the owner is getting control of it, while retreating, while on a leash in its own backyard, etc.

I understand why you’d stop following that page, but why on Earth did you start?

I’ll grant that it could have been a threat, but most certainly NOT a deadly one. I can even admit that the owner is at fault for not properly restraining his dog, but people do make mistakes and the dog did not deserve that kind of punishment. For fucks sake, the owner put him away in the car. I highly doubt he thought the dog was going to jump out the window.

I havent watched the video (its restricted for content) but thats should be the end of the analysis.

I’m generally in favor of letting cops (or anyone really) shoot any unrestrained dogs that comes charging at them.

I’m not really sure that a video of a bunch of cops beating a dog with billy clubs is going to make you any less upset.

Well the cops were acting in self defense, a civilian in the same situation could have done the same thing. These cops aren’t gettign away with anything that you or I wouldn’t be able to do.

I don’t know if this is LAPD but if they are staying within the bounds of the law, they are way ahead of the curve as far as LAPD goes.

I think the take home lesson here for all potential criminals is clear.

You can kill men. You can kill women. You can even kill children. You can kill entire families.

But when you’re killing an entire family, make sure you don’t hurt their dog. That will upset people.

There were three cops standing around. Two of them held the handcuffed suspect while the other pulled out a gun and killed it. Plenty of other cops in the immediate vicinity.

I suspect he could have pulled out his billy club or flashlight and held the dog at bay with ease, while he waited for some back-up. I did the same thing with a Nerf baseball bat before when a dog approached me. I think I was a teen-ager back then. I’ve even seen videos of Lion tamers who use long poles to hold them at bay.

Now, instead of defusing the situation like cops are supposed to do, the city is outraged. Seems like mostly everyone outside of the smug members here at the SD would agree with me, and not you.

That’s a damned big dog, and a Rottweiler can be a serious threat. It’s hard for me to see how anyone could be blaming the cops based on what I’m seeing from the seemingly saner posters in this thread. The guy who was to blame is the guy who injected himself into a situation that had nothing to do with him, and brought a large dog along as well. What the hell was this guy thinking, interfering in an ongoing police investigation and bringing a Rottweiler in to boot??

Well the LAPD has a horrible reputation so there is a tendency among the population to interpret things in the light least favorable to the LAPD.

I don’t think that most people agree with you. It may be that most of the people you know agree with you. it may be that most people who are posting on CNN.com agree with you but thats no more a poll than the ones than the online polls that Bill O Reilly or the Ed Show has.

The defusing part comes before the dog attacks. Maybe four cops surrounding a handcuffed man looked like a dogfight to the poor dog. He did what any dog would do.

They were in a tough situation. They managed to keep the handcuffed guy in custody and under control,

Part of my criticism is that the guy wasn’t putting up much resistance if any.

and were able to defend themselves from the attacking dog. It looks to me like they are well trained based on the video. It was a job well done.

A handcuffed man isn’t going to run very far. He certainly couldn’t get back in his car and drive off. Unless the guy was instructing the dog to bite, the logical move would have been to take a few steps back away from the handcuffed guy. The dogs aggressiveness level might drop if he sees the cops step away from his master. That would also give the dumbshit a chance to save the dog’s life by calming it down.

THAT’s where I thought that the cops failed.

Once the dog lunges though there’s no coming back. That’s a dog breed that is very affectionate but also extremely loyal and has a build capable of inflicting a lot of medical damage.

So my criticism is how the cops operated BEFORE the dog attacked. During the attack they did what they had to do.

Well, consider me one of them. The problem that I have is that SO many people treat animals like they have NO value that they need someone in their corner. Women? Children? The elderly? Don’t worry, everyone will speak up. Pets? Wild animals? Not so much.

For pet owners, at least as I see it, it is getting sickening and frightening. Yes, I know they are “just” animals…but so are humans.

I really just don’t understand the anti-pet, anti-animal crowd. Enjoy your sterile universe, one giant paved lot, where nothing grows, nothing happens, and no one is happy…but its SAFE! Gloriously SAFE!

I’m not watching this video, as I am fond of big scary dogs. Mine were all rescued German Shepherds who were smarter than their original owners. They make fine family pets with the side benefit of being lethal weapons, and too many people refuse to allow for both characteristics so I don’t recommend them to anyone.

Last week in NH, a pit bull (or alleged pit bull) clamped onto a guy’s leg and wouldn’t let go, and was also shot dead by a policeman on the spot. The woman owner is planning to sue for damages. You can be in the process of being actively mauled and have the owner fail to perceive the problem you’ve having with the dog, never mind expecting said owner to cope with it. And you have police often choosing a gun to remove a threat over other methods; the two things are in no way mutually exclusive and can run smack into each other in random places, and cause shitstorms like this one.
