Well, it took me long enough, but the Downunder Doper site is finally online, right here.
With a grand total of nine Doper profiles, we aren’t exactly about to overtake the People Pages, but at least we’re here. I’ve gotta send an arse-kicking email to those Aussie Dopers I know of who haven’t yet added their names (ahemRedboss), so I’m sure we’ll get a few more. If anybody’s profile is inaccurate, please let me know, and I’ll fix it up. Also, anyone who would like to help with the site, or who has an uncontrollable urge to take over as webmaster, don’t be shy.
Anyway, feel free to check it out. Dunno how it looks on Internet Explorer yet (mine crashed and burned).
I’ll bump this up tomorrow when there are more Aussies online.
Going out for the day, so hopefully this thing’ll survive US peak time and still be on the front page when the Aussies come home from work.
Congratulations Beatle for being the first to sign the guestbook. You win $5! Oh hang on, that’s five Australian dollars. Naah forget it, you don’t want Pacific Pesos.
I tried to register, but I’m on the network at work.
Although I was using IE, the Email attempt opened a Communicator window. Since this PC is not configured for me to use Communicator I don’t know what happened.
A question for you guys… Cecil gets lots of mail from downunder, too. How did Australia find the Straight Dope? It isn’t published in any papers there, is it?
Jill
ps - Nice site!
For years, my dad used to wonder how flies landed on the ceiling, so I googled that one day, and found one of Cecil’s old columns. I read the column, got a satisfactory answer, then hit the “home” link to see what the hell this Straight Dope bizzo was all about. I went back there a few times, but didn’t discover the boards until a bit later. I’ve never seen the column in any of the papers here; a shame really. I should get onto the papers and hassle them about it. Or maybe you guys should. Hint hint, Jill. They’d be really popular here. Cecil’s writing style and humour would go well in Australia and NZ.
Okay, stupid question LD, what the hell is a “bloke”?
I have heard the term a million times but in my understanding of Great Britian (sp) and Australian terms I am not privy to that kind of information. I am just a lowly American that lives in Colorado with a very distinct Coloradoan accent (meaning I have none, we have your basic English-American accent that is pretty sterilized much like Tom Brokaw or any other news media driven person.)
In general usage, bloke = guy. You can pretty much call any adult male a “bloke”. If you want to get technical, then a bloke is probably more likely to drink beer and watch football and other “blokey” pursuits than say, retiring his study for cigars, port, and fine aged cheeses.
And I bought the first book (available here) as a present for a friend about ten years ago, and have been borrowing it off him ever since. When through the exploration of Urban Legend sites I came across the name Cecil Adams. I thought “Oh I remember him, he was funny”, and dived in. January of this year.
[Brief Hijack back to OP - sorry]
Loaded mate - you are a beauty!! the site is EX-cellent!
I will put up my profile as soon as…
A: I’ve had the studio photographer finish the airbrushing on the “boudoir studies” - (god it’s hard holding a pout for twenty minutes at a time)
and
B: I can think up things to put in my profile as funny as the people who are part of the teeming handful already. (We breed 'em full of sardonic wit down here y’know folks)
If anyone’s reading this that hasn’t been there, go and have a look! [you may now return to interesting off-subject chit-chat)
Well sheesh LD, got any BLOKE buddies that are willing to meet a fabulously strange Coloradoan and move to America and willing to drink beer and watch American football with me? I like a fine sharp chedder but I do enjoy the occasional aged Swiss. A bloke is just what I need!
Excellent page, LoadedDog!! You’ve done well, and we’re all proud of you.
JillGat - I was given the link to the Straight Dope Website by my cousin, who also lives in Australia. No idea how he got it. I visited, read, laughed, and then promptly forgot about the site for months. Then there was a reference to it in the Harry Potter fan newsgroup I was frequenting at the time, but it pointed to the forums (I didn’t find them on my first visit). Well, once I found them, I signed up and have been a member ever since!
