The Bear and the Dragon

Okay, I’m in this forum, because although I do NOT intend to make this a great debate about abortion, population control, etc., I feel that it may just end up that way.

I’m reading Clancy’s latest novel. In it he describes a situation of a Chinese woman having an “unauthorized” pregnancy. Because she has elected to not abort the fetus early on, the doctor attempts to (before the baby has taken a breath) inject the skull with a syringe of formaldehyde to kill it.

My gut reaction was that there was no way that this could possibly be what really happens. A quick search of both goto.com and google.com didn’t come up with any articles that would actually address what China’s policies are, or how they enforce them. Lots of references to how they violate human rights, etc. but no hard facts.

So please, all you wise ones, open my naive little eyes and let me know if this is the real deal or not. Clancy’s usually pretty real-to-life, so my gut is to trust that what he says does happen. Can anyone verify?

Here is an article written by someone who interviewed a Chinese obstetrician who confirmed this method is used.

For those who do not wish to read the article, it says that this procedure does take place though most infanticides in rural China are by starvation.
