Does anyone remember 1960s English film The Bed-Sitting Room? I’ve only seen it once, and that was yonks ago. Early-'80s. It was about life in England after a nuclear war. IIRC, people turn into mutants and inanimate objects.
Yes! And if anyone ever finds it on DVD/video, let me know.
I saw it on TV late at night about two years ago in a Richard Lester/Rita Tushingham double feature together with “The Knack”.
It is at the top of my list of films I’m dying to see.
There are three VHS tapes listed on eBay. One seller will only accept U.S. bids and will not ship overseas. I assume that it’s NTSC format. The other two specify that they are NTSC format.
I thought about buying one, but I have a feeling it’s a bootleg. Not that I have a problem with bootlegs, if I can’t get it any other way; but I can’t really be spending money right now. If it’s a bootleg, then there will be others later.
I checked Amazon, and “voted” for its release on DVD. (Hey, it worked for Betty Blue! )
From Entertainment Weekly
The International Museum of Photography regularly shows films not available anywhere else, and *The Bed-Sitting Room popped up earlier this year.
It is a remarkable example of “opening up” a play, although you could see how surrealistic it would be on a bare stage. Spike Milligan of the Goons was a co-writer of the original.
There’s really nothing like it, even among apocalypse films. It’s as nasty a commentary on society as you can find. Amazing film, but it kinda ruined the careers of everybody involved in it, at least for a while.
Excellent!
It’s funny, serendipity is. I read a remark in another thread (I don’t remember which one) that reminded me of something that reminded me of something. Like pachinko balls bouncing in the game, my thoughts landed upon The Bed-Sitting Room – a film I hadn’t thought of in donkey’s years. I decided to post this thread, and found that people actually remember this obscure film and that it’s scheduled for release in 2005. Groovy.
