The Big Bang Theory: Season 8, Episode 21 (April 16, 2015) -- "The Communication Deterioration"

Oh, this episode was episode 21 for the current season. So, I’m suspecting there will only be one more before the reruns start.

This current season started under a bit of a cloud with the stalled contract negotiations for the cast. Next season might start off better.

I’m wondering, how far in advance of taping are the scripts written? Sure, there’s probably a writer or three in attendance during table reads and rehearsals for any changes, but still…

Egad. I have a DVR and even I note the commercials zipping by saying there’s 3 more episodes left this season after this one.

Better than last week’s. So not the worst episode of the season, let alone ever. (The Speckerman Recurrence, for the record.) But still a really blah episode.

The only nice part was Penny trying out the triple knocking part. But then it lead to her getting advice from Sheldon that even Penny would have figured out on her own in half a second. So, I’m guessing they wanted the knocking joke and couldn’t figure out what to do afterwards. Sort of like most of the bits in the past year+.

They’ve already done the “Can’t work well together as a group because Sheldon becomes a jerk.” thing too many times. Etc. Just too much rehash … and not done well.

I can’t say for sure about the current set of TBBT episodes, but remarkably, most sitcoms are not written at all far in advance. Maybe a half dozen episodes tops have the rough story lines generally figured out. (And for a sitcom, the storyline is very far from a finished script.) But they are writing and rewriting the current episode right up to and during taping. It’s a very hectic world once you get well into a season. Everything is a last minute rush.
