The Big Bang Theory, Season 9, Episode 2 (September 28, 2015) -- "The Separation Oscillation"

No, Emily said something like, “If you’re trying to break up with me, you’re going to have to say it. I’m not going to do it for you.”

And Raj replied, “Break up with you? No, I’m trying to tell you that I love you.”

Which greatly disappointed me, because I really don’t think Emily is working as a character, and I was hoping to see the last of her.

I like the actress, but I agree that her weirdness is jarring, and does NOT fit the rest of the characters on the show.

I’d like to see Raj finally make a relationship work, but this ensemble cast is spreading beyond the ability of a half hour show to be able to give them all anything to do in that time… and ghod forbid we should have an episode where Sheldon doesn’t do anything.

lol

I’ve had Sheldon Cooper fatigue since, roughly, Act 2 of the pilot. He is my single least-favorite character in the history of television. But, with what they’re paying Jim Parsons, I think that you and I need to both get used to being disappointed.

I didn’t like the Emily character either. I wish they’d bring back Lucy; her oddball-ness made her a good fit with the group.

I also didn’t like the Sheldon/Penny kiss. It made me wince and look away from the screen.

Seconded. Lucy was terrific. Emily just sucked.

Not to mention imaginary

Yvette the vet was potentially more interesting than either of them.

Interesting to see all this Lucy love. I always liked her as well (but then I’m a fan of Garfunkel and Oates, and thus of Kate Micucci). But when she was actually on the show, I remember a lot of “I can’t stand Lucy! She sucks! Get rid of her!” Oh, how times change. Of course, I’m not saying that anyone here said that, but it was a sentiment I saw a lot of on the web.

I wonder what ever happened with Yvette the Vet? They definitely seemed to be setting her up as a love interest for Raj–she gave him that note, and they even had Penny notice sparks between them. Then nothing, and suddenly Emily is introduced. I wonder if Yvette’s actress became unavailable for some reason.

As much as I enjoy Kate Micucci in other things, I couldn’t stand Lucy.

Yvette was certainly attractive, but the writers don’t seem to know how to get comedy out of Raj except as a sidekick to Howard.

Maybe I should have said “A show that makes masturbatory jokes is either coming or going!”

I like her weirdness, myself. I’m hoping that she is still around.

I have a suspicion that IRL, someone as interested in horror and gore would kind of have that as their own geekdom, and would probably be more geeky and less well adjusted, and would actually fit into the group better than Emily does. It’s her fixation on that stuff while being in most other ways entirely normal that makes her seem to be an unusual character on the show to me. That’s why Lucy seemed a better fit- she was the right level of antisocial and awkward to fit in just fine with the 4 guys. If anything, they make the 4 guys a lot less awkward and weird than they’d probably be.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d probably get along really well in real life with an Emily and want to throw Lucy off a high bridge, but on the show, Emily comes across as kind of creepy.

What **bump **said. On the show, she just seems… not a good fit. I had the same problem with Lucy; the actress is great, but the character… well… where can you go with the character?

Raj used to have an issue with speaking in front of women. When the thing became unfunny and awkward, he got over it. Now I find myself wondering if Sheldon is going to have a similar epiphany, or if being a self obsessed jerk is simply too indented into his character, or what.

…or if we’re going to drag this out yet another season. I really wondered when they said they were contracting for three more seasons.

Agreed. The other nice thing about Lucy: she wasn’t a genius. You don’t have to be super-smart to be socially handicapped. And I liked the way they handled her anxiety of being around people. Sometimes, occasionally, the show will let Sheldon stop being an unrepentant, annoying man-child and remind us that someone with his kind of social incomprehension can have trouble just getting through the day. Lucy was the same way; there was a bit of poignancy to her.

I can’t stand Emily because she doesn’t like Penny. Fuck that bitch!

Emily doesn’t like Penny? I knew she was laughing at Howard due to the toilet incident, but when did she and Penny not get along?

When she found out that Raj and Penny attempted a drunken hookup, that was only foiled by Raj’s impatience.

Urr? Musta missed that one.

Although I’d think it would cause her to be more hacked off at Raj than at Penny.

And when combined with Howard’s toilet incident, I’d think it would make Emily rather leery of this particular social circle.

And then again, when you consider some of Emily’s weirder quirks, maybe she doesn’t stick out so much after all…

It happened before Raj met Emily. She doesn’t like Penny because (a) she and Raj are still friends and (b) she didn’t think Penny would be prettier than her.

I agree with this 100%. Getting rid of him might actually get me to watch again. But it won’t happen, because people like you and I are in the minority.
I also turn off his Intel commercials.
