As many of you know there are many things lacking in Cuba, among them are freedom to criticize the government and Internet access. Cuba’s Minister of Informatica, Ramiro Valdez, has referred to the Internet as “one of the tools for global extermination”, and a “wild colt that can and must be controlled.”
The Cuban penal code criminalizes any criticism of the government and government officials, as well as unauthorized access to the Internet. Even so there a number of bloggers from Cuba who manage to get access to the Internet and publish. One of my favorites is this guy , who writes in Spanish and like almost every other Cuban blogger also writes anonimously.
But there is one blogger who chooses to write using her own name, and even has her photo and personal details listed in her web site. Her name is Yoani Sanchez . She has attracted some international attention, and has been listed as one of Time manazine’s World’s Most Influential People , along side the Dalai Lama, Hilary Clinton and Steve Jobs.
If you can read Spanish you should read this blog, and if you can’t the blog has an English version available, but it lags behind the main site.
One her latest postings talks about how she’s being warned that she’s being watched and her “case” is being studied by government officials, to which she says, in part:
"Poco, muy poco –me aclaran- puede hacerse ya para que no toquen a mi puerta una mañana bien temprano.
En espera de eso, quiero señalar que no guardo armas bajo la cama. Sin embargo, he cometido un delito sistemático y execrable: me he creído libre. "
translated:
"Little very little, they tell me, can be done now to keep them from coming to knock on my door early some morning.
Waiting for that moment I want to point out that I do not keep weapons under my bed. However, I have commited a systematic and damnable crime: I have thought myself to be free."
