Shell CANNOT be allowed to drill in the waters north of Alaska. They will display the same bullshit Imperial attitude towards the project; I personally guarantee you Shell drilling Alaska is a DEATH WARRANT for the region. Forever. amen
Do not fucking get me started on my position towards the God damn Brits right now!
OP is obviously a joke, but think about it for a minute . . .
Imagine if it was Yemeni Petroleum, or Chinese Petroleum, or Mexican Petroleum that caused this spill. People would be saying shit like this in all seriousness.
As noted, if this is a rant about Shell you want to target the windmill-dwelling clog wearers, rather than the land of dodgy teeth.
If it’s a rant about BP then you need to wise up about the nature of multinational coporations, and think about how much influence the average Brit has over the operational processes of BP.
I am really not an angry person. I just work peacefully and have been having a great time. But it has been nearly 5 months since the blowout, and I am still constantly reminded that a region of the world just went up in smoke, there is a new 10,000+ square mile dead zone, a thousand billion creatures flipped over and croaked… all for nothing. I find it infuriating, and on top of that I am getting upset that I keep returning to anger.
Yeah I know it is stupid to blame the Brits as a group for the BP spill. But you know, I used to like to listen to the BBC off and on, and now I generally find it insulting. The coverage of the disaster started to seem like propaganda run by partisan interests to shush the whole thing. Now those plummy accents themselves suggest all kinds of negative personal characteristics. It doesn’t seem rational to me either, but I think I have come to not trust Brits. And that company is still allowed to work on our soil
Now Shell is lined up to drill the arctic, and it is sure to end in tears. The region will be destroyed by spills big and small, and then I’ll probably start to suspect the Dutch of skullduggery and what have you while simultaneously knowing it is a silly attitude. Either way, nothing will bring back the arctic seas once they are spoiled.
I would just as soon Shell were not allowed to touch the arctic. Or anyone else for that matter. My attitude toward the Brits seems spammed with negative ideas that I don’t much want to admit to. Will the same thing happen with the Dutch? Probably. I’ll waste my time trying to figure out where the profits from Shell go at the very least.
Not that there is anything I can do about who drills where. So you can see my embarrassing problem here. Circumstances are dumbing me down against my will.
Oh yes. Do you remember way back when the Chinese took our spy plane? You should have seen how much racist shit my SO got because he happened to be ethnically Chinese (he’s American, and way more American than me.)
Can you find an example or two of this? The BBC website has a very large contemporaneous archive.
Anyway, it takes a brave person to admit their emotional knee-jerkiness though, so I applaud you for that. Comprehension of the existence of such irrational feelings in humanity would benefit many countries’ foreign policies.
As for the accents, there’s not a whole hell of a lot we can do about that. We talk like we do, and it doesn’t mean a thing. Furthermore, a lot of what sounds plummy to you, sounds lower-class to us. Anyway, if it would help to disabuse you of our universal snobbish nature, feel free check out the UK’s X Factor thread for British raw talent (and some British Jerry Springer Show-like antics that you can laugh at).
I do have one really good example… the BBC through NPR from 8/1/2010. The announcer crows, "Who cares about a silly oil spill anyway?’ (or some such), and then they spend about 10 minutes more or less discussing how the whole thing is not that big a deal. I will dig up the exact link for you later today or tomorrow, and check out your hooligans later too. Thanks.
