Note that Command Sergeant Major is not really “the highest ranking enlisted man in the Army.” That honor goes to the Sergeant Major of the Army, who has an office right next to the Army Chief of Staff.

Sergeant Majors, Command Sergeant Majors, and the Sergeant Major of the Army all are E-9s.
