It’s golf. One never slays the demons. The best you do is keep them at bay for a time. I say that knowing I’ll be playing a round this afternoon. ![]()
Kuchar and Spieth both look about 10 years older without their caps.
You have to admire athletes who respond to poor results by being challenged into producing excellent results. Most of us would have tanked after that tee shot on 13. Which, btw, produced a result I am quite familiar with.
That was an amazing stretch. And you can’t deny what Spieth’s accomplished so far. Will be fun to see if he can follow-up at the PGA.
I never thought of Kuch as particularly long. He’s like a modern Tom Kite - always in the mix, but not a bunch of high profile wins. Course he always has that big old grin…
I guess I was a little surprised to hear Kuch during interviews this weekend. Didn’t sound too terribly intelligent. Of course, I don’t know why I was expecting him to sound like anything other than an athlete.
It would be hard not to like Spieth. Seems like a polite, respectful young man, from a solid family and a HS sweetheart. Haven’t heard a bad word about him. But for some reason, he doesn’t really excite me. Not sure why. But it is hard to think of anyone else as #1 player in the world right now.
Check out the rankings. Yeah, I know it is a complex calculation over time, but it is hard to imagine how DJ picked up more points than the guy who just won the Open! :smack:
I’ve long been a fan of DJ, but he sure hasn’t done anything since tumbling down the steps at the Masters. Tons of other strong young players out there. Haven’t heard much from Day, McIlroy, etc. And Matsuyama has been playing tough, but no personality there for me to get excited about.
Uh, excuse me? He’s won the Honda Classic, The Barclays, The TPC, a World Match-Play Championship, The Heritage, and The Memorial. Indeed, his only win that WASN’T high-profile was the Turning Stone Resort Championship (a fall tour stop).
And unlike Tom Kite, he doesn’t have a major to his name. Of course, Kite was 43 when he finally won his (I was there; that was a hell of a day to play golf!), so Kuch has time still. ![]()
The thing about Speith is - OK he’s still young, but apart from that - is that he’s erratic. His game is all over the place off the tee. Beneath the calm exterior is all kinds of “FUUUUUUUUUU…”. But, he’s good enough to recover as amply demonstrated on Sunday. That’s box-office right there.
He’s not as insanely talented an explorer of the outer reaches of the golf course as Seve was - who is? - but the way he played his second on the 13th and then the subsequent holes reminded me of the great man.
And - thankfully, since he is the 2d youngest (after Jack) to 3 majors, so we can stop talking about that has-been Tiger. I mean, if Tiger was better than Jack as reflected by the higher quality of competition, just think how much better that Tiger Spieth must be! (Tongue firmly in cheek.)
