It’s simple: due to a) the (former) homeowners’ leaving the property unoccupied for 47.2357628 consecutive hours, and b) the (former) squatters having posted a Sumptuary Writ of Adverse Occupancy Haggersmaggle, the (former) squatters are the (new) homeowners. So they are the ones entitled to stand their ground.
(Which makes every bit as much sense as many of the SovCit “legal” arguments I’ve come across.)
