At what cost? Is risking innocent lives during a high speed police chase worth enforcing a speeding ticket or a possible stolen vehicle?
I agree. The government should certainly level fines, get liens on Bundy’s property, and try to ruin him financially, like the hospital has done to Ammon. Fuck, get a court order to seize his damn cattle and take them. I too am confounded why (outside of embarrassment over the prosecutorial misconduct) the government has not sought other means to hit Cliven where it hurts.

His continued transgressions risk lives. If you want to minimize risk to human lives, get him arrested ASAP.
I think they already did that; or at any rate tried it. That’s when the guns came out: when they were trying to take them.

I’m guessing that “American Patriot” suffered no ill consequences for aiming a loaded rifle at law enforcement. I’m sure he still proudly flies his huge US flag next to his “don’t tread on me” flag from his coal rolling pickup bed while his pocket constitution still protects him.
The terrorists do things like laying siege to a hospital for daring to provide medical treatment. Let them keep on doing things like that, and sooner or later, someone’s going to get an itchy trigger finger, and they’ll start shooting at hospitals. When that happens, almost certainly, innocent lives will be lost. So arrest them now, before that happens. And yes, arresting them is likely to result in the terrorists shooting, too. Police are supposed to be able to deal with that.
And/or people are going to die in the hospital for lack of proper treatment; due to care providers not being able to or not willing to show up, and/or to their being distracted and unable to think straight. And/or people are going to die because of being not in the hospital because they were unwilling or unable to get there.
If they’d succeeded in getting that baby back untreated: that child would have died. If somebody else doesn’t take their non-thriving baby in because they believe the crap that’s being spewed: that child may die. Maybe that’s already happened, for all we know.
And no matter what happens, people will look at it as the wrong course. Arrests, confrontations, or prosecution? Going too harsh. Slowly putting on pressure? Too soft.
I’m in the pressure camp myself. Why poke the bear if you can just keep it contained and away from people? Ok, that metaphor may not fully work but you get me.
Agreed. I think being lenient on Bundy and his thugs is what emboldened the MAGAts on January 6. We need to slam the door on that kind of thinking. Hard.
Haven’t the anti-abortion crowd already murdered health care providers? Hasn’t at least one of said murderers of health care providers been able to hide out with the help of the community in which he was hiding?
I may be wrong, but ISTR hearing or reading that. At the very least, they’ve murdered at least one doctor and have been idolized for it by the anti-abortion crowd.

ETA: I tried Googling for killers of abortion doctors who hid out for a long time, with help, and I don’t doubt it’s happened, but got lost in a tangle of stories about such murderers.
