I’m thinking that the feds know that this thing is likely going to fall apart on its own and are just waiting it out.
I would bet the county “deputy” (Actually, County Sheriff Dave Ward) talked to the FBI beforehand, and this was the plan of all LEO on the scene. It’s likely that the FBI knows that Ward, as a local, as a sheriff, as a “non-federal dude” would have much better luck de-escalating the situation and getting the bundy-idiots to see reason.
Too bad the Bundy-idiots were too stupid, and/or too attention-seeking.
Except, no one is doing what this thugfest wants them to do. The local LEA is just letting them wander around town and barf at the media and whatever. The message is, “You dorks are inconsequential.” What they want is to get large swaths of wilderness privatized, which is not happening. Is not showing the faintest flicker of happening. All we are seeing is impotent internetistic rage petering out IRL. This incident is progressing in the best way possible.
That might be the message you’re getting. The message I’m getting is that “we care too much about the feelings of a bunch of good ole boys to resolve this problem swiftly and decisively.”
It’s annoying to see this whole thing center around the Bundy’s ego. So what they want to feel consequential? So what they want to rally supporters? They have that in common with all militant groups! In a response situation, I’m not seeing why the LEO should concern themselves with any that.
The longer this gets drawn out, the more ego will be invested in this standoff and the more behind-the-scenes drama there will be, elevating the potential for property damage and violence. And each day that passes is one more day that these men can walk around free, with unfettered access to guns that other criminals are not allowed to touch. Is this fair? Does this make any sense?

It wouldn’t hurt to look up the definition of the word standoff. It only means that there is a stalemate between parties, it doesn’t require the parties to be in close proximity. The feds want the Bundys gone, the Bundys want the feds to, um, whatever. Neither is getting what they want. They’re at a stalemate.
How about we keep the preference for non-violent solutions but apply them more inclusively? It wouldn’t bother me that law enforcement treats these guys so well if they did the same for everybody else.
Even “OCCUPY refuge protestors”, whatsoever the fuck that might be…

I am pleased to note that no one has stooped to a juvenile and sniggering “Beef Jerky” reference. Yet.
I probably should have said ‘peaceful protest, so far’, as in nobody has yet been shot. Carrying a weapon is provocative, but it’s not violent in and of itself, nor is it illegal. They’ve issued barely veiled threats, but there’s not yet been follow-through. It could certainly escalate easily, should someone in the group decide to get trigger happy. I don’t defend these idiots in the slightest, and hope they are all prosecuted for their actions.

I’m all for non-violent solutions. But there is a big difference between non-violence and letting people just flagrantly flout federal law for days at a time. In treating these guys “so well”, the government is actually giving credence to the idea that having an arsenal of guns is exactly what you need to make the government shrink away.
Americans have a short-attention span; pretty soon something is going to happen that will take our eyes off what is going on in Oregon. If the standoff doesn’t resolve before then with public arrests, you know what the takeaway message is going be? The same one Clive Bundy left us. And Clive Bundy is still walking around as a free man with money in his pocket.
We should set up a pool for when they start drinking their own urine.
Let’s assume the G-men gun those motherfuckers down right this minute. Other than making you feel better, what has been accomplished? Can you point out previous instances of outlaws who were motivated by federal insouciance towards delusional hillbillies?

In your mind, is there is any course of action that exists between complete inaction and “mowing motherfuckers down”?
All I want is a cop to put these guys in handcuffs and walk them to a patrol car. Don’t even need to shove them in. But we’re acting like that is an impossibility.
