the BURN turkey BURN ! mmp

Home from the park and irking.
It is warming up nicely out there.

Two dogs got into a fight today, right up against me while I was sitting on the bench. Fortunately their owners were close enough to get in there and pull them apart. The other woman there told me she was scared I was going to get bit.
Ripple had been telling me it was time to go home. I wonder if he sensed the tension building.

Not sure what all I’m going to do today. I have a list.
Well see what gets done.

I would highly suggest that anyone needing to go to the grocery do so today as the Publix was a nightmare and will only be worse tomorrow. I got almost 11 pounds of sweet taters. I hope it’s enough.

ELEVEN POUNDS??? How many people are eating??

I have a few Amish sweet potatoes, and I picked up a couple more yesterday. I’m going to make 2 casseroles - one to take to Mom’s and one for home. And I’m hoping I have everything I need because I don’t want to venture to the grocery store till next week.

Brent came in and asked what my workload is for the rest of the week. I said “Do you mean tomorrow?” Then I pointed out that I have only 6 days after that. He had this look of panic…

They’re gonna miss me when I’m gone.

The neighbor who is hosting the shindig told me to pick up 10 or twelve. I got 12. I think there will be many people there. I think it’s too many potatoes but we will see. They were on sale for 49 Cents per pound so pretty cheap.

Well. Good morning all.
I jave stated the cooking. Cornbread for the dressing is done. I cried and cried and chopped several onions and celery into a fine dice. Ziplocked and stowed. Piecrusts are made and saran wrapped in the fridge.
More to do…

Yesterday we got MiL to the renal specialist. It looks like her kidneys aren’t doing well. She is 82 and has never taken her diabetes seriously, so it’s not a surprise. It’s still not welcome news.
Today I am waiting for groceries to be delivered, and later I shall go out and do some shopping at Trader Joe’s. They tend to have a few things that I can’t get elsewhere.

I still need to do a few things outside before this storm comes in, but I don’t know if I’ll get to everything.
Happy Tuesday.

Thank you, missred, I shall give him many skriches from yous guys (to revert to my Chicago vernacular). He’s such an endearing ol’ boy: loves everyone and is sure they love him back. Glad I get a chance to say goodbye.

The nice thing about Thanksgiving-ing at someone else’s house is that I won’t have to deal with the post-feast turkey carcass. It takes up too much fridge room, so I always get all the meat off it and break down the rest (for soup) so it’ll fit in the fridge. Not my favorite task.

I like football. I do not like football on Thanksgiving: too much noise, too little interaction, and help in the kitchen gets interrupted by rushes to the living room to see the instant replay. Is that un-American of me? I’ll stand here quietly so it’s easier to throw yams at me.

faraway look on face

My fondest T-Day memory is the year Mr VOW said he would do the entire Thanksgiving meal. Really! I’m serious!

I was completely banished from the kitchen! He even made celery stuffed with cream cheese for appetizers!

We all sat down to a lovely meal. I was giddy because I didn’t have to DO anything!

I mean, here it is, forty or so years later, and I remember the absolute JOY!

He even cleaned the kitchen, and put everything away! GAWD, I love that man!

Later that day, I went on a safari, hunting for leftovers. I poked around the refrigerator, and noticed something … missing.

“Sweetheart, where’s the carcass?”

“Oh, I cut all the meat off of it, and I threw it away.”

HE THREW IT AWAY! The absolute BRILLIANCE of his actions reduced me to a blubbering mess, weeping from pure joy!

No stinking up the house boiling the carcass! No straining the broth and sorting through that horrible GOOP trying to pick out the little pieces of meat! No forcing people to eat turkey soup and having them spit out pieces of gristle, bits of rubbery skin, and lots of little bones!

Mr VOW’s “recipe” for the post-Thanksgiving turkey carcass is the very best! I have used it ever since, and I pass it on to friends and family. Everyone LOVES it!

~VOW, you are a perfect person. I’ll say it again: Can I be you?
[:)]

Bekkers, Sweetheart, you may come visit, any time. We love company!

Bring your own mousetraps. We’re still fighting off the little shits!

Mr VOW is cordial, gracious, and funny! A wonderful host! But stay for a week, and you’ll wonder why I haven’t killed him. Yet.

After all these years, we’ve got our system worked out. It’s been a helluva ride. God broke the mold after making Mr VOW. I was able to catch him young, and he’s still a project in-progress.

Our church starts getting busy again once Thanksgiving is over. One of our services is a healing service in early December to try and center ourselves back where we need to be; its a pretty terrific one as well.
Other than that we are indeed off irk Thursday so I broke the Santa suit out for tomorrow. Its a tradition I started back when I started at Da Jungle – Thanksgiving (or in this case closest day) and Christmas Eve (or closest day) dammit ------- if the elves have to work at least the Fat Guy can show up and spread some love. A couple bosses who know me from before have already warned the others that whatever they think ---- that ain’t it. But that its really great in a I-can’t-describe-it-but-I-love-it sort of way.

My maternal Gramma didn’t sweep her yard, but she swept and mopped her (linoleum) kitchen floor every day.

I actually like Ferraro Roche better than Almond Roca, but both are great in my book.

Yes. Yes we are.

Mom, that recipe is pretty much what my my Mom called scalloped potatoes and ham. She prolly got it from the same place.

May I be forgiven when I say she probably just wants a shopping trip with dear old Mom’s credit cards.

SIL’s mother, whom we love, cooks like that all the time. She says it’s healthier. She’s 98, so maybe she knows something we don’t.

Well, Wifey says she needs to get on this computer to do some work, so I’ll save my story about my favorite aunt’s bestest ever thanksgiving turkey until another time.

My sister and I once accidentally shot the turkey out of its cooking vessel onto the sidewalk and into the ivy. It was surprisingly good, though a bit gritty.

My mom is a huge foodie and gets all these random ridiculous gadgets. So one year she decides it’s the height of deliciousness to deep fry a turkey. As luck would have it, on those first generation turkey friers there was no really good way to remove said turkey from the oil. So we took the frier outside and wandered around for a minute trying to find a good spot to remove it where it’d be no big deal if we spilled a little oil. Turns out there was no good way to remove that damn bird. My sister almost poured the whole frier full of oil on me, I jumped back, the turkey hit the ground and shot across the sidewalk, into the ivy and skidded to a stop in the mulch. So I picked it up, picked off the worst of it and we plopped it back into the frier to cook off the dirt (I have no idea why but it seemed like a good idea at the time).

I think that was the same year that racoon ate Christmas breakfast. Guess mom will never use the back porch as a fridge again.

And I admit this cold sober and --------- flashing on an image of Mom with one of my mortars (one is big enough to handle it) loaded with a turkey and aiming at a raccoon and saying “two problems solved”.

I’m well ahead on cooking. I’m thankful for the help DIL and Mid-daughter are providing.
I look NO gift horse in the mouth.
Now, the lil’wrekker is a different story. She’s been lobbying and outright begging for a shopping trip. She accomplished the one thing I asked of her, the bagging and donation of clothes in her closet. I got caught in my own designs to get that closet cleaned:smack:
Look for a bad, bad, bad thread on our quickie shopping excursion.
Mid-daughter should on the place within the hour. I made Chili. And, of course the weather warmed up here, today. In fact we’re under tornado watch. Jeez. Not great Chili weather.
I bet they eat it though. It always surprises me how much food this bunch scarfs down.
My kitchen is clean for now. I’m ready for many people taking it over. SIL is a chef and he loves pulling rank on us all. I may have an easy day tomorrow. We’ll see.
Have a good evening all. (:))

The worst/strangest Thanksgiving dinner I ever had was back in the early 80s. We trekked out to my brother’s house in the wee hours of the morning. My sister in law had dutifully thawed the turkey, and at whatever the appropriate time was on Thanksgiving day, she cut the package open and nearly dies from the SMELL. Rotten!

Now what?

This was far suburban Chicagoland in the early 80s. Stores of any sort open on that day just wasn’t to be had. Even gas stations were closed - you really had to plan ahead for the day back then. It took quite a bit of calling to find a pizza place that was open.

Got my sleep pacemaker turned on yesterday. Now for a fairly slow, aka deliberate pace, process to find the right intensity.

Daughter and SIL came early, so I don’t have to tuck Roxy in. That kid was wearing me out!! But we had a good supper and I boiled a dozen eggs that will be sliced and deviled tomorrow.

I got an email from a former boss - we’re going to try to meet up before Christmas and get caught up. Other than that, it’s a quiet evening.

**Bumba **- I think the recipe name is ham and potato scallop, but I call it casserole because I’m a rebel like that.

And my day winds down.

I walked to the grocery store to get items for salad. It’s basically baby spinach ,dried cranberries toasted cashews, toasted pumpkin seeds, and toasted sesame seeds and some tiny cubes of gruyére in a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. I’ll have it all prepped and will mix it on Thursday.

OK, serious question: those of you who have turkey on Thanksgiving and then again on Christmas, do you get sick of turkey? It just seems like between the two big turkey-and-dressing dinners and all the leftovers, people must eat turkey for weeks on end.

Please enlighten me. We always had lasagna on Christmas, so I have no experience on this one.

I’d eat turkey any time - I love it! I used to buy a breast and roast it. Haven’t done it in ages, but I need to.

I like deli turkey, too.

Another day. They are replacing the windows in my apartment tomorrow starting at 7:30.. I’m home all day with Gordie. Is 0600 too early to start guzzling martinis?

 Peaches, you are on THE LIST!

Neiie, I never tire of turkey.

overlyverbose, resetting the cock on the 5 second rule?:D:dubious::stuck_out_tongue:
