Here’s a crazy man’s plan on what the Democrat’s should do with unified control: Why Democrats should rig the Senate and pack the Supreme Court.

And as for ‘not happening’: given control of Congress - my reading of the Constitution is that if CA wants to split, it just takes Congressional approval (not subject to the veto or the courts - Article IV, section 3:

No Republican controlled Congress would ever allow for four more Democratic Senators.

Exactly. They don’t want to be part of thum thar librulz.

They want to run things themselves without understanding that splitting off means they will be a tax sink and the other liberal and coastal counties that currently finance them won’t any more.

In the event, they’d just belly up to the federal hog trough with all the other red states, all the while complaining about the federal debt.

Absolutely true - that’s why the plan requires the Democrats to take the House (possible if not probable) and the Senate (much less likely, but more likely lately than I would have thought a couple of months ago) in 2018 . It doesn’t require either the Presidency (which would need 2020) or the courts.

This Tim Draper dude is at it again. Now he claims he has enough signatures to get his plan to divide California into 3 separate states onto November’s ballot.

His layout divides the state by counties, creating a small, narrow state that stretches from about Monterrey to Los Angeles; an expansive state that includes Orange County, San Diego, up to Mono County and across part of the Central Valley; and a third state that includes Sacramento, San Francisco and the rest of Northern California, as far south as Merced.

His claim is that the current state of California is just too big to be governable. Which, well, I guess you could probably say that about Texas, New York, Florida and maybe several others. I have my doubts about whether this is any kind of an answer to the grumbling.

What makes me feel like this initiative is doomed on its face is how unilateral it is. If I wanted to present an idea like this, I think it would have to involve citizens working to figure out where the lines should be drawn. Because, quite frankly, Draper’s map looks plainly stupid to me.

What is the view from the Golden State on this?

And the boarder doesn’t even pay any rent!! We Californians often refer to our state as Alta California, since we all know we’re part of Mexico, so to speak. Somos mexicanos, amigo!

If you want to divide California up by micro-cultures you’ll need a lot more than 6 states, or even 66. Just within the Bay Area, the ambiences change from community to community. Drive from San Jose to Santa Cruz and you’ll think you’re in a different country! Driving down 101 once I stopped for a meal near San Luis Obispo and remember thinking the young woman seated near me didn’t seem like a Central California girl. Sure enough, she came from the “Valley,” a hundred miles away.

And speaking of Santa Barbara, my sister lived in Isla Vista way back when, when they burned down the Bank of America. :eek: What do I win?

LOL…for those not keeping score, Mexicali to Barstow is north-south (well, sort of NNW-SSE, but you get the point). And roughly twice the length of California’s border.

Should probably be Calexico-Barstow, though…Mexicali is on the Mexican side.

You would have to split it into an even number of sub-states and make sure that it didn’t affect the national electoral opportunities significantly - and yet, also look to each party like there was an opportunity for their team to grow in national influence - in order for the Federal government to accept the split.

With an odd number, one party gains in Congress.

Not necessarily. Puerto Rico can be admitted to even it out.

The very fact that people are discussing this really makes me weep for humanity. The same jackholes who ran Brexit are now leaving their slimetrails all over California trying to push this. Not to sound too paranoid, but breaking up California is part of the Russian project strategy to destabilize the west. They may not be funding or directly pushing this, but they sure are interested in the outcome.

You didn’t succeed in not sounding too paranoid, though.

Yeah, I had trouble getting my mind around that too. I’m not sure exactly why, either, since it derives from the Spanish, which should make it way-NAY-may, not wy-NEE-mee.

Accurate Spanish pronunciation has historically not been a strong suit of Californians. Just ask anyone living in Sanazay or Lusanj’lus.
