The Canadope Café, 2014 Edition: In 3-D!

I just got back from voting. I held my nose and voted tactically. To be honest from the choices I had they all stunk imo, some more than others. I voted for the party I thought would do the less damage.

I’m pretty sure Marois will be announcing her retirement pretty soon.

I’m looking forward to the day when Quebeckers aren’t stuck voting for a crappy party just to prevent a referendum. It would be so much better for the province, and Canada, if they had the choice to turf a party without implicitly endorsing the separatist movement.

There’s a live stream here - so far, it’s looking very much like a Liberal majority government.

Overwhelmingly so. That is great news for Canada. Great news.

I kind of wish Hypnagogic Jerk was still around. I would have loved to have heard his take on the campaign, and I’d like to hear his views on what’s happening tonight. He’d probably be more insightful than the talking heads on TV right now.

Marois trailing in her own riding by ~ 60 votes.

All right, fun’s over.

Everyone get back to talking about the weather.

Well, a check of the Environment Canada website is telling me that it’s cloudy in Montreal, with rain expected later.

This is the lowest seat total for the PQ since 1989, and the lowest in the popular vote since 1970.

I wonder what her little finger is saying now.

That she needs a job? While it’s still close it appears Marois is going to lose her own seat.

Yep. She’s behind by about 1,000 votes now with 182/186 polls reporting.

This may be a dumb question, but I just realized there was a provincial election in 2012. So why is there one now? Did the PQ call this thinking the conditions were right for a majority?

Yes. They were leading in the polls at the moment she called it; they had a minority government. There wasn’t a defeat in the Assembly; she decided the time was right to win a majority.

Et au revoir, madame.

And she did resign. Good riddance.

Apparently Justin Trudeau is not eligible to vote in the Quebec election; while Mulcair (humourously) voted for the PLQ.

She was hoping to get the majority required to pass the Charter of Secular Values. Now, that issue is dead for a while.

Look to PKP to run for leader of the PQ.

Has the ‘revelation’ that the person who has controlled The Sun chain of news outlets is a hard core separatist had any effect on the sales of said newspapers or TV outlets? I’m just curious…

There are some good interactive graphics and maps on La Presse: Élections Québec 2014

I had not appreciated that Couillard was standing in Roberval, in the Lac St Jean area: that’s a traditional PQ stronghold.

Yep, you said it. Lucien Bouchard was from Chicoutimi and represented Jonquière in the National Assembly. Now those districts look like two blue dots in an approaching Liberal-red tide.

He is a former PLQ cabinet minister.
