It was only a matter of time before things like this started popping up…
Parody or not I’m still having nightmares after clicking that link ![]()
Farley Mowat dead at 92. ![]()
I read a lot of his books when I was younger. I never really got into his later works involving environmentalism, but I did enjoy The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be, and The Boat who Wouldn’t Float, as well as his books on his service in WWII (The Regiment and And No Birds Sang). I think I still have them someplace–I should try to find them and reread them. They were good books.
I read Never Cry Wolf, The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be, and one other that I’m having a hard time recalling. Excellent stories.
I was required to read a number of his books when I was younger because they were part of the Saskatoon school curriculum (e.g. Owls in the Family). I was more into sci-fi/fantasy back then, so I thought they were fairly dull stuff, but maybe I’d appreciate his work more as an adult.
Spoons, we had the same reading list!
I always found the difference between the Regiment and No Birds fascinating. The Regiment is a typical gung-ho young soldier’s account, speaking of war as the “experience of a lifetime” sort of thing. No Birds is a much more personal account, from a mature man looking back, willing to talk about the horrors of war in a way that he probably couldn’t when he first came back from overseas.
And the Canadian Council of Law Deans has joined the calls for the PM to backdown from his attack on the Chief Justice:
Law-school deans join critics of Harper’s attack on top judge
I really enjoyed a few of his books and would read more if I bumped into them.
I’ve been reading about his books and it turns out I haven’t read the entire The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be but I did read a chapter in a book of short stories about dogs. I’d love to find that book again but a quick google is not helping.
I did read The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float, Never Cry Wolf, and The Serpent’s Coil (about hurricanes)
We must have.
In fairness, my Dad had met Farley Mowat a few times before I was born, and Dad became a fan for life, so he had a number of the books. Dad’s library was varied and interesting, and comprised of a surprising amount of Canadiana: Farley Mowat, Angus Mowat (Farley’s father), and Greg Clark (anybody remember him?), among others.
Tim Hudak; “I will fire one hundred thousand people.”
Aaaand campaign over, Tim loses.
I couldn’t believe he said that. Chickens in 100,000 fewer pots and Benett buggies in 100,000 garages. I LOL’d and predicted another Liberal/NDP NDP/Liberal government. I’ll bet there’s a run on Tory sackcloth and ashes.
What a maroon.
It appeals to the true conservatives, but he had their vote already. It won’t help convince swing voters. But really, we need to do something of significance to balance the budget, and I’m not convinced the Liberals or NDP will ever be able to do that. We’re worse off per capita than California now. What the fuck should we do? Nothing?
I’m not saying he’s the wrong choice, I’m saying he’s saying the wrong things.
Hudak is stupid, at least when it comes to campaigning. You do not say things like “I’ll fire 100,000 people but it won’t affect your services” because even your base will not believe you. It’s a transparent lie. He’s campaigning against an awful government and, somehow, he’s managed to shoot all the bullets at himself. Why is he not running on a platform of being things the Liberals are not - like, you know, honest? Scandal-free?
Adding to this that Andrea Horwath is widely despised in her own party, and deservedly so - she is an absolutely horrible person - and has turned off her own base, the Liberals could get away with it, incredibly enough.
Well, it depends what news outlet you read. Most of the cuts will come from privatization, which would eventually alleviate the province of gold-plated pensions.
As a federal employee who will soon be privatized, I have no problem with it. Let’s get serious about this province, and this country’s finances and try not to bankrupt our children or grandchildren. I know it sounds clichéd, but really, we still have a opportunity to get back on track here in Canada. I’m afraid the US will never, ever be able to balance their books. I hope we don’t get to that point.
Been through the Mike Harris nonsense; not interested in putting up with it again.
Loved Mike Harris. We need another common sense revolution right now.
His cutting the tax base resulted in increasing the debt by 20 billion in his first term, in addition to his heavy downloading onto municipalities, which was no more than robbing Peter to pay Paul. that not good financial management in my books.
Yeah, and at the same time the federal liberals reduced transfer payments to Ontario by 30 billion dollars. Go figure.
