The Canadope Café 2016: The North Awakens

April 30 is nominally the tax deadline, and here in northern Ontario it’s also the law’s deadline for changing from studded tires to non-studded tires, so wanting to remain a free citizen, I figured I’d best change the tires on the 30th.

In preparation, I started by watching how the pros do it. I was surprised and impressed to see that they can change all four tires in under two seconds. That gave me something to work for.

Long arm jack with which to move the world out from under the tires – check. Air tool to make that really cool and emotionally satisfying BRRAAAAPPPPPPP sound – check. Torque wrench to defeat the infamous death wobble – check. Goggles – check (hey, they wore them in the video, and I had a pair in the vehicle all ready for skiing on the 1st, so why not).

Well now I wasn’t expecting to break the two second barrier, and in all the excitement of the moment, I forgot to time myself, but all in all, the tire change went well, for on the road after leaving the pit, the left side tires did not fall off even when I had to stop for the resting duck.

I think that next time I go for the record, I can improve my time if I don’t stop to pet the neighbours’ dog, and the neighbours’ other dog, and the neighbours’ neighbours’ dog, and the dog from the guy across the street from the neighbours’ neighbour. It’s important to have goals in life, so perhaps next time I’ll break the twenty-minute barrier if I can train the neighbourhood pack to be a better pit crew.

I’ve got a golf game on Monday, and not having played since last year, decided to hit a bucket on the range yesterday. Then I played nine, on the Par 3, to which the driving range is attached.

My score was OK, but the muscles today–phew! I love playing golf, but every spring, I go though the same thing.

Well since mid March to now have been some the crappiest sequential weeks in my life ai am glad I did my taxes in early. Filed them the first week of March. I got a notice of assessment this week that my 2014 taxes were recalculated based on my 2015 filing information. I expect my small refund any day.

(Fort he record my taxes were always last minute until these last few years. But now I am wishing I had delayed. The place I get my taxes done is near a place that has fantastic melt in your mouth ribs and fries on special on Saturdays. I really want ribs now, although the bar is almost closed and I am sure the kitchen closed hours ago.)

The ribs, right? It always gets me in the rib cage. Ouch!

Mmm - ribs…

May 2nd, actually. Interpretation Act says that if a statutory deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it bumps to the next business day.

I have made that part of my tax-planning for this year.

So…you’re saying…I filed unnecessarily early?

I hate when that happens!

I have recently decided that filing early is awesome because Schadenfreude is more fun than anxiety. Have an awesome weekend. I will go sweep fallen plum.blossoms off my car and go to the beach.

Taxes all done and filed and everything! Thanks be to Turbo-Tax!

Question: What is the T2? Has anyone ever seen it?

T1 is the main income tax reporting form; T4 comes from your employer with all the income and deductions; T3 and T5 are income reporting chits; what’s the T2?

A quicky google indicates that it is the corporate equivalent to T1.

That makes sense - thanks.

My refund hit my account sometime mid-March. I had a lovely day puttering about the yard and chatting with my neighbours. Then my parents dropped in unexpectedly and we had dinner at a wonderful little hole-in-the-wall Jamaican place.

The closest thing to dealing with a tax deadline was blasting a wasp nest with Raid, I guess. Avoided getting stung, though, so even that is really no comparison.

Taxes were done a few weeks ago.

Today, I joined some friends at the sports bar, where we watched the Toronto Raptors win over the Indiana Pacers. I’m not really a basketball fan, but it was good to catch up with my friends during the game.

May Day. Last day oftelemarkingfor me this season unless I win a lottery and travel south.

Say does anyone know if “Suisha Gardens”, a couple blocks off of Clifton Hill in Niagara is still there?

They were/are Fun.

Senator Duffy was back in his office today. He’ll likely be present when the Senate re-convenes this week.

He lost out on some $270,000 of salary, since he was suspended without pay - the poor little muffin.

Since he was acquitted of all charges against him (those that were not thrown away outright), where is the justification in punishing him by refusing to pay him back? I wonder if he’ll sue for back pay.

And what will become of Pamela Wallin’s impendng court case? I would guess the crown will chose not to proceed.

Of course, the RCMP and the crown are refusing all comment on why they went ahead with this mess of a prosecution

I likethis quotefrom David Scott, Ottawa lawyer

Yes, because obviously the PMO wanted this matter to be front and centre in the media for the two years running up to an election, rather than buried away.

And obviously Premier Wynne would like nothing better than to do a corrupt favour for her buddy Stephen.

:roll eyes:

Harper had the choice of trying to cover up the whole stinking mess, or ripping the bandage off and hoping for the best.

And I don’t think that Wynne controls the RCMP.

All Criminal Code prosecutions are conducted by the provincial Attorney General.

The police decide whether to lay a charge; the provincial Crown decides whether to proceed to trial.
