The Canadope Café 2016: The North Awakens

I don’t know. She was pissed off about it, saying something about having to deal with both the photo deposit and then having to come back later to double check that the original cheque was not also deposited. Since I can’t count past ten without taking off either a sock or my underwear, I didn’t really grasp what her concern was, other than she was very annoyed at the increase in paperwork for her.

I wonder why it’s 92 years? Why not a nice, round number like 100? Or even 90?

Why 92? Does anybody know?

Mr. Sensitivity, that one.

The number was suggested by the spirit of Mackenzie King’s dog, and no one’s ever bothered to change it.

I have no idea.

The short answer is: no one knows for sure.

According to this, though:

In the States it’s 72 years, which is usually explained as being “average lifespan,” although apparently there’s not a lot of evidence for that either.

A wild ass guess: apply the thinking behind the common law rule against perpetuities used in estate law to prevent the dead from unduly fettering future generations, namely either vest within life in being plus 21 years or suck eggs. The average Canadian’s lifespan in 1981 was 71. 71 + 21 = 92.

Now that’s just a guess. Another possibility is based on the answer to life, the universe and everything, namely 42, being added to the McDonald’s Canada 1983 fifty cent Coke token. 42 + 50 = 92.

Eight year old boys are not noted for their tact.

I read stuff like this and it pisses me off. As the census forms are mandatory to fill out, why not just create a national ID system that is just as mandatory, would require you to keep your address current, and give the government all the information it needs to provide the services it wants to provide. The added bonus is that identity theft would plummet and it would make interactions with the government and entities who have to do due diligence before they do business with you far more efficient.

Does parliamentary privilege cover assault?

It’s Canada. Two minutes for elbowing. Matching penalty, two for interference.

It’s a wash.

Is that a reference to this? What was that all about anyway?

Doesn’t Justin know he’s supposed to say “Fuddle-duddle!”

“Fuddle-duddle”? Sounds like this was more along the lines of, “Just watch me.”

Yeah, the golden boy ain’t so golden afterall: grabbing people, elbowing people.

From the CBC:

Lovely.

Any guess what the uproar would be if a Conservative did that?

The story is more fun if you simply read the hysterical MP comments.

Can anyone explain the context? What were all the members doing, milling about in the centre aisle like that? if a vote was coming up, they should have been in their seats.

The Hill Times has an article on it. It isn’t very clear as to why the PM would be possessed of “an anger fierce, in his face and his eyes,”.

I also don’t see how the physical contact between the PM and the NDP member could be so "…very overwhelming, and so I [NDP MP] left the chamber to go and sit in the lobby. I missed the vote [on C-14] because of this.” I suppose she could be an ex-Italian football player.

He was out of line and apologized. Ms. Brosseau seems to be playing this up. I’m a 5’6’’ 150 lbs guy and I’ve been backed into and shoved by bigger guys that Mr. Trudeau. It just isn’t that big a deal.

If this and the nanny-gate scandal are the best that the haters can come up with then I have to conclude that Mr. Trudeau is doing a pretty good job.

I’m so enjoying the butt hurt over how popular he is!

People want lots of selfies? He’s being a Kardashian! He’s shamelessly promoting himself ! As opposed to shunning the press, and holding mostly ‘no questions’ press conferences? Or being widely despised like Mr Harper was by the time he exited office?

Like it’s somehow a bad thing that he’s well liked, respected, welcomed around the world and spoken highly of by other world leaders. When did it become a sin for constituents to really like the guy they elected? At the same time easily acknowledging he ain’t perfect and likely has a lot yet to learn.

The speculation is that they were being childish and trying to delay the vote. Nobody covered themselves with glory in this thing, least of all Trudeau. The House has Speaker to deal with stupid stunts.
