The cat likes Vegemite

This could either set international relations waaaay back–or it could solve a lot of problems. Picture it: Palestinians offer Vegemite on a falafel patty to Jews who in turn offer them Vegemite on a matzo.

I might have to give it another go.

I liked Vegemite! Have not had any since I was in Melbourne.

As for your cat, you’re no doubt aware of:

The old jingle:

“A Tonka toy, built Tonka tough just for fun, fun… fun”

After my time, I fear.

You are not that old Johnny LA.

Unless you did not grow up with Tonka Trucks.

It’s a trope:

Here’s a Good Example I found on how thinly to spread it.

The other great use for Vegemite by the way is putting a good dollop into stews and casseroles, or it’s my secret ingredient in my Bologanise sauce.

Cute.

This makes sense. Vegemite has umamiall over the place.

My muffins often look like the rightmost picture.

How would Vegemite taste if it were not so insanely salty?

It is basically boullion. I bought a jar of “Better Than Boullion” vegetable flavor and it was pretty similar - actually, kind of better to my palate. But I would not give that to my cat, because unlike Vegemite, it has onion in it.

Thai cats eat rice. At least, that’s what many Thai humans will tell you.

Cats are weird, man.

As an aside, Edward de Bono proposed exactly this as a, (very), partial solution to the Arab/Israeli conflict.

Until I searched for it I thought this was an idea I’d dreampt up.

Peter

Vegemite is salty. Few animals don’t like a lick of something salty.

That explains one of my cats’ passion for feta cheese.

Feta cheese. Yum.

He was six-foot-four and full of muscles
I said, “Do you speak-a my language?”
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich

 I must be [del]psycho[/del] psychic.

I discovered by accident that my wonderful and mysterious tortoiseshell cat Nancy Drew (1982-2001) adored brewers’ yeast. I was careful to only give her small tastes of it, though, as I was worried that it might cause an overdose of B vitamins if I allowed her to feast on it as indiscriminately as she obviously wanted to do.

While no subsequent cat I’ve owned has ever had quite the same level of passion for brewers’ yeast that Nancy Drew did, the other cats I’ve tried it on also like the stuff. I wonder if the Vegemite, being yeast based, has the same flavor appeal.

(AFAICT, nutritional yeast isn’t quite the same, from a cat’s point of view.)

Marmite is not Vegemite. The idea is the same, but the execution comes up short. I think it is the gooeiness of Marmite that makes it off-putting (IME).

I get more than enough salt, and don’t much like yeast extract anyway, so I don’t buy either Vegemite or Marmite. The cats would probably like it, but too bad for them.

On the other hand, we have one cat who eats roses (just the petals) and seems to like a sprig of rosemary as a snack.

I seem to recall that feeding the dogs brewer’s yeast sprinkled on their food was supposed to be a flea preventative. It made their skin smell/taste unappealing to fleas or something. I’m guessing your cat didn’t have fleas?
