The cat likes Vegemite

I wanted a Vegemite muffin for breakfast. When I opened the pail, the cat thought the Vegemite smelled more interesting than his kibble, so I put a tiny, tiny smear on the end of my finger and presented it to him. He sniffed it for rather a long time, then started licking. When it was nearly gone, he took the tip of my finger in his mouth as if there was still a bit there. I walked away while I was waiting for my English muffin to toast, and I could hear ‘mom’ telling Tonka, ‘I’m not giving you any Vegemite!’ (She won’t eat it.) I didn’t give him any more either. Poor thing.

This is an April Fools thing right?

God I hope so. Keep that up and there will be a dead kitty

But I’ve been eating Vegemite for 30 years, and look how I turned out!

Sigh. I’m there with you. My cat likes cheese (especially moldy or stinky cheeses) and yesterday he discovered hummus. Some cats are just weird like that.

I can’t believe anyone would torture a poor, helpless cat like that.

I totally agree!! It’s terrible how Johnny would give his cat just a tiny taste of the elixir of the gods and then not give him any more.

I did feel bad about that…

But I wanted to check to make sure it was safe. (If he gets a taste for it, my pail of Vegemite might not be safe!) I was concerned that since it is a yeast extract, there might be a danger of fermentation in his guy like bread dough would do. I doubt cooked yeast poses a problem, but I wanted to check just the same. I found a post where someone said a vet told her it was OK, and I found this NZ veterinary centre page that says (of giving a cat medicine} ‘It’s best to use something savory like… vegemite.’ There are statements I’ve found saying that Vegemite is healthy for cats (just like humans!).

He doesn’t get many human-food treats; and when he does, not very much. The SO has banned cheese, since he occasionally has asthma attacks. (One or two a day, every couple/few days.) She’s concerned that milk products will induce congestion. So he’ll get a sliver of ham or a crumb of bacon or a little piece of fish. I suppose I can share a taste of my Vegemite from time to time, since it seems it’s OK for cats to eat it.

Many cats like marmite too, especially on toast.

Bumped.

This is probably out of the question: Cadbury Chocolate and Vegemite combine in latest social media-driven food mash-up - ABC News

One of my cats loves Vaseline - she gets a bit every night, seems to help with hairballs… I added a very tiny bit of yogurt (plain/no BGH/no flavor) to the wet food, which has helped the vomiting ! She was throwing up every day, now, not at all… They had antibiotics a few months ago which killed off the good bacteria (I guess)

All I want is orange filled milk chocolate … Somehow,it’s gone out of style:mad:

I’m thinking… No.

I mean, I like Vegemite, and I like chocolate. But…

You and the whole of Australia, believe me.

We had a cat that loved green beans. Cats, man.

Things my cat likes to eat (if I let him):

Twiglets (He’ll actually try and bat them out of my hand if he sees me eating them)
Popcorn
Toast
Pickled onion Monster Munch
Cheese
Ear Wax :dubious:
Vegetable Oil (If I fry eggs I need to put the pan in the oven while it’s cooling, otherwise he’ll jump on the side and lick the oil out of the pan)

My cat is weird.

WHOA!

<sound of screeching brakes>

You buy Vegemite by the pailful? As in bucketload?

I have a small jar in my fridge that has been with me for decades…through a couple of moves. I bought it in a moment of culinary earnestness, and said earnestness prevents me from throwing it out.

I feel like I’m really missing out on something beloved by [del]millions[/del] lots of people, and, dang, even your cat likes it. I hate missing out on things. Maybe I should give it another try. I had a thread on here during my last attempt to like it, but could you give me some brief instructions on how to use it? I seem to recall that it should be spread in the toast very thinly.

I’m going to try it. I understand it’s got caramel in it too, and only the tiniest bit of Vegemite, so it should be quite similar to salted caramel and chocolate. I’m game!

2.5 kg pail. That’s not even six pounds! The link says it goes well with Vita-Weat Crackers, SAO Crackers, and Crumpets. It’s good enough on crackers, but I prefer it on English muffins.

I didn’t have the ‘spread thinly’ advice when I started eating it, so I think I spread it on a little thick. I liked it, but I gather that’s Not How It’s Done. So. Toast an English muffin and apply butter or margarine. (Margarine spreads easier.) Apply Vegemite – thinly, I suppose – and mix it in with the marge. OK, here’s where I’m going to get into trouble. I fold the corners in on one slice of not-individually-wrapped American cheese so that I have one square and four points that make a square. Basically, two half-slices of cheese in shapes that fit on an English muffin. Being lazy, I usually just put the cheese on each half of the warm muffin and eat it like that. Sometimes I’ll pop it under the broiler to make the cheese bubbly. Now I’m going to get a lot of indignant posts telling me I’m supposed to use sharp cheddar, and I’m a Philistine for using American. But hey, Kraft Vegemite, Kraft cheese! :stuck_out_tongue:

Or you can make a Vegemite sandwich. Bread, butter/marge, Vegemite. And cheese, or not.

A coworker back in the '80s liked to put Vegemite on his Thai BBQ chicken he got off the catering truck.

I like a nice smear of Vegemite inside of a breakfast burrito.

I’m pretty boring, really. I don’t use it in recipes; just as a condiment. I find it good on eggs or potatoes.

It’s not only a sandwich spread, it’s an asphalt sealant. :stuck_out_tongue:
