It’s almost impossible to read a WWII AAF European history and not come across one account or another of his exploits. B-17 pilot, survivor of 52 missions and shot down twice over enemy territory, he was the best of the best.

I never met him, but I’ve read so much about him that I am a little teary-eyed to learn this, which hasn’t happened for any other person listed this year.
