The Celebrity Death Pool 2007

I’m on the board! I’m on the board!

I hate you.

Alice Ghostley (Esmeralda), 81
Rex Humbard, 88
Ian Gilmour, 81
Marcel Marceau, 84

Bad week to be an octogenarian…

Me too…

I logged in specifically to make that joke…

C’mon, this ends my two-year virginity.

And mine is what, chopped liver?

Hey, champ, dont worry about it. Lot’s of guys are still virgins at your age. When the time is right, it’ll happen I promise. smugly pats carnivorous plant on the back

Touch the third hair pal, touch the third hair.

Three hairs inside the Venus Flytrap leaf must be touched before the trap will close and the insect be devoured.

Here’s a direct link. The news of Humbard’s passing reminded me that my paternal grandmother and her daughter, although practicing Catholics, occasionally took Sunday drives from their Cleveland home to Cuyahoga Falls in order to eat at the Cathedral of Tomorrow’s buffet.

That reads like the start of one of Sampiro’s stories. (Well, if Sampiro were from Ohio…)

oops…

Can we have a moment of silence please?

Was that when it still belonged to Rex Humbard or after Ernest Angley (who is STILL hale & hearty AFAIK) bought it?

As Marcel said in Mel Brooks’ SILENT MOVIE…

“NO!”

Humbard still owned the Cathedral and its ancillary businesses at the time. Angley didn’t buy the property until 1994, by which time my aunt was dead, and Grandma was in a nursing home. Although the rotating tower restaurant Humbard planned was never completed, he did indeed operate a buffet during his tenure in Cuyahoga Falls – Grandma and Aunt Karen would occasionally say they had “just been to Rex’s” when making one of their regular Sunday visits during the 1960’s and '70’s, when I was growing up in northeast Ohio.

Owner of the Chicago Blackhawks Bill Wirtz has passed away at 77.

Maybe this will finally turn the Blackhawks around.

Step One: Get those home games back on TV.

Lois Maxwell - Miss Moneypenny in 14 James Bond movies - has died at the age of 80.

OK, I have a question about the death pool for next year. I’m concerned about the longevity of one of the alternates I had for this year. I was hoping to promote him to the list for 2008 but he keeps attempting suicide. Would it be against the rules to write to him and try to be a bit encouraging about life?

I think the rules are that if you are involved in the death, you get no points. Actually, I think it’s a bit stronger than that – you may be cast out of the competition altogether.

But I don’t see how encouraging anyone to live longer violates any rules. To be safe, you should not include a date after which suicide will be ok. IMHO, “Please hold it together in 2007”, would be acceptable, but IANACDP judge, just stating my personal interpretation.

Personally I think sump’n like, “Please be a dear and not off yourself until New Year’s Day 2008” would be, well, if not quite against the rules, at least tacky.

Also, sending him depressing horrible links to depressing horrible things starting on January 1, 2008 would be aiding and abetting his death, so please don’t do that either.

However, a nice “Cheer Up! 2007 is almost over!” note would seem acceptable and gracious.

Hope this helps zelie.
