Woodruff, an African-American, had been the USA’s last surviving track-and-field gold medalist from the competition famed for his and teammate Jesse Owens’s refutation of Adolf Hitler’s “master race” theory.
Sam Dana, who had been the oldest living former National Football League player, passed away at the age of 104. Dana played for the Hartford Blues in 1926 and the football New York Yankees in 1928. At Columbia University, he had been a teammate of Lou Gehrig, who went on to a Hall of Fame career with the New York Yankees of baseball’s American League.
Legendary Rock ‘n’ Roll Disc Jockey Jim Hawthorne has passed on at 45RPM to that great radio station in the sky.
George Osmond, father of Donny, Marie, and several other singers, has died at the age of 90.
George Ratterman, who quarterbacked the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and several professional football teams, has passed away at the age of 80. After his retirement from the Cleveland Browns, Ratterman was elected sheriff of Kentucky’s Campbell County and helped clean up organized crime in Newport, which had gained a reputation as the “Sin City of the South”.
