Dick Nolan, who helped design the Dallas Cowboys’ flex defense before serving as the San Francisco 49ers’ head coach from 1968 to ‘75, has died at the age of 75. Nolan, who had played with the National Football League’s New York Giants, also spent two full seasons and most of a third as the New Orleans Saints’ head coach.
Movie director Delbert Mann has died at the age of 87. He received the best director Oscar for the 1955 film Marty.
I should’ve gone with an all author list. Seems to be the year for them.
Not the ones on my list.
C’mon Salinger and Lee!
Augustus F. Hawkins, who became California’s first black U.S. Representative when he was elected to the House in 1962, has died at the age of 100. He retired from Congress in 1991 after being involved in passing such legislation as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act of 1978.
Joe Nuxhall, who made his Cincinnati Reds debut at the age of 15 and still holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever to play in baseball’s major leagues, has died at the age of 79. After compiling a 135-117 record as a pitcher in the “bigs”, Nuxhall served for several decades as a radio broadcaster for the Reds.
I can’t wait to see the casket. I’m sure she will make the lining herself, probably from a fine white silk. The flower arrangements will be muted but very tasteful. And the hors d’oeuvres will be to die for!
Legendary Philadelphia radio DJ Hy Lit has died at 73.
Sir, you have won the Tasteless But Funny Award for today.
Yes, I believe you are continuing to earn your special title.
*Please don’t squeeze the Charmin * Guy is dead
Good night, Mr. Whipple.
Crap, I had him on last year’s list, until I decided to vote the all evil ticket this year.
No one ever told you that only the good die young?
I thought he died last year?
I thought the same thing!
Sigrid Valdis, who played Colonel Klink’s secretary on Hogan’s Heroes and also married the show’s star Robert Crane has died at 72.
Quickie scoreboard update, and then I have an announcement to make:
The only change to the scoreboard from last time is that gaucho scores 16 points with the unique pick of Norman Mailer. Congratulations, gaucho!

Hawkins, Jim Hawthorne, Martha Kostyra, Eve Curie Labouisse, Ira Levin, Hy Lit, Delbert Mann, Dick Nolan, Joe Nuxhall, George Osmond, Ricky Parent, George Ratterman, Linda Stein, Paul Tibbetts, Sigrid Valdis, Porter Wagoner, Dick Wilson, or John Woodruff.
It has been my pleasure to serve as your Gatekeeper of Death since taking over from our noble Little Nemo a few years ago. However, I regret that I have been unable to devote the time this game really requires to this year’s game, and I do not foresee my situation changing any time in the near future. With that in mind, I am passing the torch to our fearless friend amarone, who will be taking over from me with the 2008 game. In the words of the Wizard of Oz: “Obey him as you would me.” (In other words, start sucking up now.) I will of course finish the scoring for the 2007 game sometime in January.
Yours in death,
a35362
a round of applause for a35362 and the wonderful job he as done with the CDP
